Best Targeting Method for Random Battlegrounds

Hey new to PvP and wow in General I’m really interested in the random battle grounds, and I’m looking for suggestions on Targeting, macros, and keybind and Just the most efficient way to play I personally click on people not sure if this is the most reliable.

INFO:
I have a logitech mouse with 12 programmable buttons on the side
And I play a Holy Paladin (Healer)

Welcome to the game, hope you’re enjoying it so far.

Personally (I play DPS) I like to have enemy healthbars displayed, and I think I usually click to target, or tab target in some situations. In arenas I think some players prefer to use binds to select specific allies/enemies. Focus targeting and mouseover macros can be nice for some things like that, based on what you want to be able to do. You’ll find that much of that comes down to personal preference and what kind of content you do. I haven’t played healer recently, so I don’t really know how they go about things.

I like the addon BattlegroundEnemies, which puts up clickable status bars for both your team and the other team, sometimes I’ll use that to select target if I’m going for someone specific like a healer or flag carrier. I also use Capping, BigDebuffs, OmniBar/OmniCD, Diminish, ThreatPlates, and ReFlex, and a few others that do less-important or non-pvp things. There are several HUD options available as well. I use Drathal’s HUD, but I only have it set to track a few specific things.

Most stuff like that you’ll have to just play around with and experiment to find what you like. Most of the time, videos or streamers you watch will list somewhere (or viewers will frequently ask them) what addons they’re using.

You might want to check out the class forums and the class discord for your character to get you pointed in the right direction, especially with macros and keybinds. And then just browse Curse and try out whatever looks like it might be useful.

I don’t use any targeting macros. I use Wow’s built in raid frames and battlegroundenemies to target the other team. I just mouse click on who I am going to heal.

For random BGs, just use a mouse over macro. You can google it and find a ton of guides.

tab is the default to target closest. hit it again it will change to the next closest and so on.

please go check the auction house for gear upgrades. the drops rewarded from leveling bgs are garbage and you’ll feel alot more useful once your ilevel is over 100.

These are all great, I’ll add one more must-have PvP addon IMO. REporter. Absolutely amazing addon. It puts a scale-able, much improved, zone map for each bg, that shows spawn timers of nodes/flags, highlights your healers on the mini-map and it puts buttons by the map that you can simply click to call INC to your current location so you don’t have to type for help while trying to survive vs two rogues who want to ninja your base. It’s most helpful on Seething shore, you can mouseover each node on the zone map to see the name, no more having to open up the map and figure out where “waterfall” or “ridge” is. It also puts a timer at the top below the score showing who wins in the end. Quite helpful on AB like maps, you can know for sure if 2 bases is enough with your lead or if you need 3, etc.

I forgot about that one. I used to have that installed, but I don’t remember if I ever had it during Seething Shore. It’s nice to be able to easily call out numbers and locations in random bgs, especially in domination.

I like how BGE has the indicators to show how many players have someone targeted.

BattlegroundEnemies helps very much, especially if you have a buddy or two to focus down enemies. You can just click on the list of people in range, and it shows most focused targets as well. Doesn’t work well in 40 mans though.

/focus macro is very good. You can do various things with it, such as assist the focus (/assist focus), or cast support at focus without switching off of your current target (/cast [@focus] Hand of Sacrifice). It’s very good if you play with a friend, or there is just a good player that you notice and you want to support.

ReTabBinder also helps making tabbing a little smarter. (Although it does make it annoying when you need to target PvE targets in PvP, like to get a victory rush off of a mob)

ReTabBinder is nice if you don’t like having separate keybinds for PvP/PvE tab targeting. When you join a pvp zone (BG, arena, etc.) it makes Tab target the next enemy player and not the next enemy.

I don’t use any addons or macros, I just manually click on the healers in the back of the crowd (or whatever other priority target). Tab-target is just too unreliable - especially in a big teamfight with so many random pets/minions running around :man_facepalming:

Tab-target is still OK for the purpose of quickly getting DoTs up on the enemy team.

Look into mouseover macros for holy pally.

Tab targetting is okay, but make sure you have a button to “tab-target” enemy players ONLY.

This is a real thing. It all makes sense now. Game is bad and so are its players

This should work great in conjunction with target-of-target macros for a healer. In other words, use Tab-target to acquire an enemy target, and then your spell heals their target (which is likely the person they are actively attacking).

ReTabBinder is a great addon for this if you don’t want two binds.
