Best ROGUE Spec for PvP? Especially Battlegrounds

I’ve Mained Prot Paladin in PvP since 2009. Many X-pacs ago, I developed a hatred (and respect) for Rogues because they were always sneaking up on me and causing chaos, lmao. Eventually I took the old adage, if ya can’t beat 'em, join 'em, to heart and started playing Rogues. But it’s been a few X-pacs since I’ve played mine.

I have always played Combat / Outlaw, but like Prot Pally, in The War Within, Outlaw seems to be the spec with the lowest performance among Rogues. So before I settle myself back into Rogue, I’d like to know…

Which ROGUE spec has the most useful utility for BGs (including BGB, RBG), as this is my main interest in Warcraft. I love BGs the most, and love Blitz! I want to have fun doing what I love.

I’m going to piggyback the op here…Long time healer, hard core casual player, primarily LFR, random bgs, and random epic bgs.

Haven’t rolled a dps in years, wanted to give rogue a try, what spec has a user friendly rotation that utilizes a good portion of the build as passive talents (I use no addons or aids - just clicking)? I would prioritize my desired style of play - I would say survivability and stealth over damage.

I’m open for any suggestions - not concerned with meters, HKs, etc - just wanna have some fun and create some chaos that rogues have cause me over the years.

Well, welcome to rogue. The answer to the latter half is basically none of them. All of the specs hard require taking an inordinate amount of talents that are buttons you need to press as the design for rogue is intentionally overinflated and complex for absolutely zero reason other than “Blizzard said so.”

Sub is the closest you will get to that, as Sin requires a lot of DoT maintenance even in PvP and Outlaw is basically like playing a piano in its current state.

But, you can not pick the “passive” talents and get the same “chaos” you’re seeing from other rogues in PvP. The damage loss is so severe when trying to do so, that you’d basically be hitting enemies with a wet noodle if you tried.

Might I recommend WW Monk if you want a similar situation with 1/2 the buttons?

Thanks for the reply - I’ll have to check out subtlety - I like the idea of creating some chaos and then floating away like a fart in the wind.

I am Bloodniron; Scowlawag is my Rogue, i.e., this is my post. Based on what I’ve been reading / researching, including here in the forums as well as in Murlok and PvPLeaderBoard, I’ve decided to go Sub. I’m 70 now, gotta get to 80. Meanwhile, I’m trying to decide what my rotation should be, and how to set up my bars.

The more passive options, the less button mashing , the better

At least that’s how I’d roll.

Sub for the sole reason that it has access to Shadowdance, which means access to Cheap Shot. It also does more damage when it gets a damage window.

When Sin/Outlaw get a damage window you can interrupt it and now they do nothing. GG. Also if you have a way to clear Rupture off of you, double that.
The Sub damage window is way harder to interrupt relatively speaking and it’s way more simple.

Sub is actually the easiest to disrupt on burst. Not every heals can dispel a bleed but everyone has a cc they can use on dance/aoe for bomb. Maintaining rupture/garrote is actually easier than lining up DR, CC, CD’s x3 for the all in that Sub needs to win.

Assassination is the way to go.

Sub has been the absolute best pvp spec for most of WoW. But since Legion it also became quite weird to play. It’s one of the most technical and timing critical specs to play, and as someone who has mained rouge since the game came out and who dabbled in previous specs UNTIL the big reworks, I still cannot for the life of me make Sub work. Just feels weird and bad. Pre-shadow theme, it was easy. Since then, yaaaaa…forget that .

Play Sin if you want a low floor, relatively high ceiling.
Play Sub if you want a significantly higher floor, but also a higher ceiling.

I will agree with Sub being hard to master. I started my Rogue for this season, and I was at first Outlaw for the PvE. I changed to Sub looking at my stats and said OK. Yeah Sub is difficult.

Just when I think I am doing ok, I have a bad BG, and I wonder what I am doing wrong. Also it seems anyone with a root can just freeze you in place and I get bombarded with AOE. Trying to stick with it, but as I am now starting to get Glad gear I want to make sure that I pick the right spec to play, and contribute to the matches.

I’ve had some RL stuff I had to prioritize the past few weeks, so other than capping Conq on my Pally each week, I haven’t done much lately. My 70 Rogue is i349 in df pvp gear. I got him to Dornogal last night and did a few quests.

Trying to decide the best course for leveling.

And where can I find a good Sub Guide for PvP?

Thanks!
