Best questing approach for a brand new player?

My gf recently downloaded the game with me. She is brand new to mmos and ive played Wow for 15 years.

That being said, i got to experience the story from burning crusade all the way until now, and she hasnt.

Would it work for us to just visit chromie and level through each expansion in chronological order? A lot has changed leveling wise and i just want her to experience the world behind the game before we focus on anything endgame related

Do yourself a solid and do WotLK timewalking. If yout want yiur gf to love the environment and music do Howling Fjord, Grizzly Hills, Sholazar.

After Sholazar id hit up Cata with Chromie and do Mount Hyjal, Twilight Highlands, and maybe Uldum if they like the desert.

If you’re still not max, you literally cannot go wrong with MoP Jade Forest and valley of the four winds.

Those should put you at max, but if my wife were to wver give two craps about mmos, thats the route id take to impress her on her first character.

If you want to play the expansions in order you can thru chromie time but she’s going to have to toggle exp off because you can barely finish one zone before hitting max as far as I’ve seen. I enjoy leveling in the old zones for the nostalgia and it’s really annoying getting yoinked back to org so quickly

Wait does timewalking end if you hit max?

Yup, it pops up a window and gives you a countdown and warps you back to your faction capital. It’s kinda annoying. I was doing Darkshore on an alliance toon and I got yanked back to SW somewhere in Ashenvale

You’re either going to have to lock experience or make a lot of characters for this as just one expansion of timewalking is more than enough to take a character from 0-60 now.

Agreed with above, but IMO BfA and Legion were really fun to run through.

Get her a boost for 60$ and spam her through dungeons so that she can get to end game faster. She can read the books later at her own leisure for the lore.

I tend to just hit TBC because I like the zones and quest density. Wife and I tried Legion but even with quest sync we still couldn’t seem to get on the same lines. Tried with Wrath and MoP and had the same issues.

I’d say bad idea for a brand new player, but you don’t learn much from leveling anymore anyhow, and in reality you’re just as overwhelmed by the rate abilities come as you would be just boosting.

We’re still learning how to walk and turn the camera, i have no intention of putting her through a dungeon when just learning the basics is already stressful. Endgame is a lot of fun, but slowing down and actually enjoying the journey seems like the play here.

Based on what ive seen here, i think we’ll just stop xp before 60 and try a few different expansions so she can get a feel for it and learn some of the backstory. Its a shame its not easier to experience the full story the way it used to be

I seriously hate that. The quest that arrives when you hit 59, that gives you the scroll or whatever to TP back to Chromie is fine enough. Leave it at that. Gives the out when you’re ready to head back. Dinging 60 before I could turn in the quest that has a reward I didn’t have the appearance of yet, or to finish off a zone for the achievement, or even when grouped with someone that was a few bubbles behind me, halfway around the world, was so annoying. Haven’t had it happen in a dungeon yet. I’m sure that is just as annoying.

I still say its a terrible idea. You can max level and then go back and enjoy everything and you can show her the whole world but to play at lower levels where end game is where all the cool stuff is anyway, I would just go strait to the end.

I don’t think it’s possible anymore to experience the whole world before reaching max level, they really changed that.

I really hate it to. First time it happened I didn’t even notice the timer at the top of the screen ticking down, wife and I were just questing away, and suddenly I’m not there anymore.

Was very jarring.

Didn’t you get some warning before that “the Veil is Tearing” at level 48 telling you to start Shadowlands? And then you deleted that and it came back? And it came back? And it came back?

I was less jarred than strongly annoyed.

I think you’re doing it right. I’ve had friends over the years join WoW, some brand new to MMORPGs, some just new to WoW. I’ve always had them take the lead in how they want to play. Give them bags, some gold, a link to WoWhead and Wowpedia (to look up characters/stories) and then let them take the lead. I was there to answer questions and show them how to look stuff up.

Some wanted to get to max ASAP (usually the ones that weren’t new to MMORPGs) and I helped with that. Some, the new-new players, wanted to see as much of the story as they could. They made multiple alts to try out different styles of play. But either way, they were in control and I got to see the world through their eyes.

Exile’s Reach is enough to get a new player a handle on the basics. If one really wants to one can continue with a trial account onwards into BfA until level 20. After that, it’s best to just jump to the latest expansion. One can do that either by buying a level boost or by starting an Evoker. Levelling in prior expansions goes too fast to know where the story goes in that expansion and those expansions include too many obsolete systems that distract from what is going on in the current expansion.

The wife and I enjoy leveling in Pandaria. The Mists farm and Tiller rep is ‘homey’, so it gives a good first impression.

Yes but you can still go and finish the quests even at maxnlevel you just dont get as rewarded when your level is higher than the bracket for the xpac.
