Thinking about getting back into retail from this month and looking to main mage again. Which spec is best for PVE going into SL at this time?
I viewed a vid a week or so ago that had frost on top of the logs. May have changed since then idk.

Arcane is absolutely not a dead spec.

They’re not dead, but they are not as good as frost.
Arcane has a slight edge on ST, frost will have the edge in the next raid tier
Never cared for arcane personally but Frost is looking absolutely fantastic.
If I stick w mage going into shadowlands I will play frost till fire scales accordingly.

Wowhead has information as to how each spec will play after pre-patch.
The guide for Arcane is calling it a potentially meta-spec but I can’t say it sounds overly great having to sit on CD’s for everything to line up. At least in SL, azerite traits will be gone so the whole ST/AoE debacle will be resolved. REALLY disappointed to see that Wowhead is saying Overpowered will still be the go-to top tier talent.
The Frost changes are interesting with BiS azerite traits and essences for the Thermal Void build. Starting off in SL with the open world questing and frost having those lovely slows, I’m inclined to think frost is what I’m going with to start.

My Gods … Cold Front has been nerfed to activate after 90 frost bolts?! !
Yeah I just saw that… totally dead in pvp now lol.
Not looking good for PVE either. That was one of frosts strengths in raid testing.
Well, for the majority of forum posters, “not as good” is the same as “dead.
Not that most would ever be able to tell the difference between good, better or best anyway

They removed frost spells from grisly ice too. There was an OP build for that too. And they nerfed Freezing Winds.

If you have 2 mages in your group, and they’re both Frost, then passing Focus Magic to each other makes for a really powerful buff for the spec and makes hitting the crit soft cap much easier. I think this factor might give Frost a slight edge earlier on in the expansion. However on pure ST I see sims putting Arcane ahead of Frost.
Seems like way too high a number.
In a 10-minute raid boss fight, you’d probably get zero procs.

Not to necro this thread but I think I am going to stick with DK. Hope mage doesn’t get too busted up going into SL.
My recent impression is that current Blizz devs have no idea how to balance or develop classes. That or they are spending so much time trying to make borrowed power systems work that the they have time to consider the most fundamental aspect of wow, class play.
Someone (can’t remember who) posted in another thread, but it looks like it will proc roughly every 4-5 minutes depending on luck with procs for ST and your personal haste levels. So in your average boss fight you’ll probably see 1 proc.
I would assume that if Blizzard intends that legendary to be used in PvE ever, they’ll reduce that 90 down to a more reasonable 30-40 so we’re at least seeing a few procs per fight.
