Best northrend zones for story

Hey all. I really love the story in Northrend so far but there are too many zones to go through before I hit level 80, so I was wondering what the best zones to go for story are. I was thinking icecrown but I dont want to miss something important since I know that’s like the final area

Icecrown is probably the worst zone to quest in there tbh. The main starting zone for horde is great for story as you get to secure a foothold and recruit a new race into the horde, dragon is also a great zone.

Never did horde quests in northrend but I enjoy howling fjord, grizzly hills, and sholazar.

Dragonblight, Zul’drak, and Icecrown are the three zones I’d say are most “central” to the WotLK plot. If you’re looking for the “what happened” of that expansion, those are the zones I’d recommend.

Thank you!

I enjoyed the Howling Fjord. That and Grizzly Hills was a blast.

I hated Borean Tundra though with a passion. Wasn’t a huge fan of Zul’drak zone/quest wise but the story was decent.

Boring Tundra to be truthful.

It did give a lot of story development as far as that aspect of the world goes, true. But that story involving the titans and the creation of azeroth never truly appealed to me or held my interest so I just kind of glazed over that when I quested there.

Agreed. Howling Fjord and Grizzly hills are the only 2 zones I do in Wrath. The part I hate about Sholazar is killing 32846723498 animals. Takes forever if there are multiple people killing them too. But overall likely my third zone if needed to hit 80.

That was always one of my favorites

My favorites were the eastern half of Northrend: Howling Fjord, Grizzly Hills, Zul’Drak, and Storm Peaks.

Howling Fjord and Storm Peaks deal with the history and lore of the Vrykul, Dwarves, and Humans.

Grizzly Hills focuses alot on the Furbolgs, Dwarves, and Ursol.

Zul’Drak is the Drakkari Empire and their Loa.

The eastern half has incredibly quest storylines. Howling Fjord has super important Vykrul lore ending with a cameo by the Lich King and the sad fate of Ymiril. It’s one of the first zones I can remember that requires you to finish the storyline in the zone dungeon. Legion really makes use of that mechanic later on.
Grizzly Hills is great and that storyline leads directly into ZulDerak.
Storm Peaks is a pretty epic finish to the Eastern half but oh boy there’s some loooooooong quest lines.

borean tundra for questing to level, but icecrown for story. the borean tundra is horribly boring though.

There’s a reason everyone called it “Boring Tundra” back in the day.

For the “main” storyline of WotLK I would suggest the following…

  1. Howling Fjord - Introduces Vrykul
  2. Dragonblight - Nerubians and the original landing of Arthas
  3. Grizzly Hills - Bit of Old Gods in addition to Worgen and San’layn. Probably less central to the story, but its one of my favs anyways  It DOES introduce the Drakkari trolls.
  4. Zul’drak - Arthas “recruits” the Drakkari.
  5. Icecrown - More disjointed than the others because it was meant to be played with a group at max level. Phasing used to make it a nightmare to complete quests. I don’t know if this is still an issue.

Borean Tundra has more “random” questlines in it than Howling Fjord, and feels more disjointed to me. Not to mention better music and art in Howling Fjord.

Sholazar focuses on Hemet and TItan action…for the most part. The scourge have a presence, but its not central to the bulk of the storytelling.

Storm Peaks focuses on the titans and their creations and has next to nothing to do with Arthas.

This guy is 100% spot on.

Howling fjiord was my personal favorite. The music and atmosohere really made it memorable.

Do all the zones. I love Storm Peaks and Dragonblight.

I just started playing after a long hiatus. There was one story line that I liked which ended with some dragon that took on human form to finish the story. Man, she was hot! I can’t recall the quest line or where to get it though. I’m thinking it ended in Grizzly Hills though.
