Hi all,
It’s been forever since I leveled a caster, and maybe it’s just me, but frost seems rough. As of right now, I usually can’t pull more than two mobs without burning every CD I’ve got. Is this normal? Is fire or arcane better for leveling? Any tips for a noob mage such as myself? Thanks!
Recently leveled another mage, and to my dismay arcane is the best spec for really low levels. Frost doesn’t shine till mastery kicks in. I don’t touch fire.
Frost was rough on me leveling to 120 as well. I did better with Arcane or Fire. However, after I got some respectable gear I went back to Frost and enjoyed it, but it can feel week or slow at times. The pay off when things click is rewarding though. I switched back to Arcane and I’m having fun with it. In general, when you’re playing a caster, try to think about managing the mobs more than damaging them. If you use your slows and freezes and your shield when needed you’ll be able to manipulate the pull. Remember, you have poly as well. Lots of tricks there you have to practice with so you’ll use them when you need them. Make a point to try a specific ability on a few pulls in a row to get the feel of it. Take a look around before the pull and have a plan for kiting the mobs. As far as talents go, I generally go for passives that enhance my core abilities rather than taking new abilities. More synergy between spells and less buttons to push. Having said all that, fire might be easier for you to get along with. Lots of instants and procs and fast moving rotation. Seems to throw damage down faster to me.

So far for me, arcane was the best spec by huge margins, like, huge, until i hit somewhere around the 50s. After that frost becomes best, especially for dungeons and aoe. Fire seems ok for single target but doesnt seem to shine in any form of gameplay for me yet. Maybe it does at higher levels.
There is always this question around here, and the answer is always the same: it depends. Different people will always prefer different specs.
My opinion is:
Arcane is hands down the best until at least lvl 40. Total OP.
From lvl 40+, I prefer Frost because I feel safer.
Fire can burst down single targets easier, and Arcane has that constant great dps, but I enjoy having control. After lvl 48 Frost is complete with Winter’s Chill, and you start to have great dps (yet still RNG). And after getting Frozen Orb you become an AoE king.

Coming back to the game and always played frost. Arcane looks pretty fun. What would your aoe rotation be when you pull a bunch of mobs?
When I got my Void Elf I leveled it as a mage and started frost and was taking forever. Yeah it is nice to have a pet but man killing 1 mob took too long. Arcane was so much faster and better. Granted, you likely will be needing to drink after every pull or 2 if the mobs are close but they go down a lot faster.
When i was leveling my mage i felt that arcane was MUCH stronger than frost or fire. After 50 i found frost to be more fun and also better overall. Arcane seemed like it got worse as i leveled up.
