Best long term tank

I recently listened to Quazii’s interview with Kyrasis - long time blood DK. He has played the tank through thick and thin and always gets the .1 title in m+. I find that admirable and would like to do the same. By that I mean stick with one tank through thick and thin. I’m not delusional enough to think I’ll be hitting title range.

For those who have played multiple tanks, which do you think has long term staying power? An oversimplistic tank could get boring.

Just looking for people’s opinions.

I like prot warrior because I prefer a mitigation tank to a self-heal tank and BDK hasn’t ever felt and still doesn’t feel intuitive to me.

But I know others are masters at and love it, so this is a me thing.

i think warrior is the most solid tank through thick and thin. Plus, they are the OG tank.

sure they have had some weaker times, but it is pretty rare that they are awful.

ignore pain works on all damage types, you can block nearly all melee attacks, there are a couple of key spell damage reduction abilities. i miss challenging shout when I am on another tank (paladin has a similar ability along with a bubble which is obviously strong). lots of stuns and interrupts. mobility is excellent.

they don’t bring much group utility of course. and they can be a bit healer dependent.

I am only starting out TWW with guardian for a change of pace. otherwise, I would be on the warrior. i am sure I will level him soon enough.

Agreed. It’s kit is straight forward and can handle all damage types. It may not be the most self sufficient but it’s active mitigation is user friendly

It’s kind of the old faithful for tanking classes in my experience.

Not always at the top. Very rarely at the bottom. It’s solid.

I like my paladin, and that’s hill I’ll die on.

i would choose the blood dk tank as a self sustain and the battle rez we can get

I agree with warrior, even when they “feel bad” they are still miles ahead of a monk or a paladin that are not meta.

They are among the only tanks that can survive multiple MS debuff. (Happen more and more in Mythic+)

If you are looking for a tank always capable de doing 10s early on, I would bet on warrior.

I always fall back onto Pally as my go to tank, it has good mitigation and self healing.
Blood DK is my close second.

I like prot pal, but they are smoked right now, so I am pushing this bear alt.

As a healer, I hated Blood DKs so much, their health bar is like a lightshow and you never really know when they are in trouble, until they suddenly go from 100 to 0 and yell at the healer

thats the problem with new healers with blood dk tanks its not the hp you need to watch its the runic bar

Guardian Druid.

You feel strong and tanky without Incarn.

Once you pop incarn however, and you roll 10+ stacks of Ironfur and your damage is reduced by 87% you feel like an absolute monster.

What about guardian druid? MotW, Brez…

I enjoy my warrior but wish I had more utility with him. No brez, dispel, etc, can feel bad at times. However, the damage and mitigation is quite nice.

If you have a healer friend - Warrior

If you a solo tank - Bdk (self heals and magic mit), Prot Pala (Mit and self heals)

If you like puggin - Bdk, and then Pala.

Prot warr is a solid tank. Always viable regardless of what the rankings say. Mained prot warr in DF, had a blast. Got just under 3k io score in s3, was in top 50 for my realm.

I am maining blood dk this xpac just because I needed a change after feeling a bit burnt out on my warr. It was a bit of a change to go from preventing dmg to healing from dmg, but it’s been fun

we are great, dont listen to haters, we bears are huge and super muscle non gay bears like super rusian hairy bears walking around with all that iron fur and doing the bear thing ya know, just being a rusian bear

Well, blood dk is always a strong choice if you like the more solo aspect of a tank. They are the least reliant on a healer, but this also puts more responsibility on you. They are by far the best solo class in the game.

Warrior is really the og tank and will always be really good at physical defensives and is usually a high damage tank, so if damage is something that is important to you, I would go warrior. The biggest problem with war is they are very healer reliant.

Bear is the easiest tank to play, but also the simplest so if you are easily bored of rotations then this tank may cause boredom, though its ability to do content is great.

Paladin is the utility tank, a lot of ways to save your fellow party members as well as a full immunity to damage if you need it. Currently they are a bit squishy but there was a blue post saying that in November that paladins would be buffed by quite a bit. Paladin is kind of like a healer, in which you also watch other people’s health and can have ways to save everyone.

Dh is movement, it’s the fastest tank and usually does really well in mythic +. My experience with dh is limited, but from playing a healer I can say that they must have a learning curve because some dh’s are invincible while others fall dead.

Brewmaster is probably going to be weaker in tww if blizzard does manage to clamp down on spiking damage, which was their stated goal. This was brew’s big advantage, that they weren’t as affected by spiking damage as other tanks. Like dh my experience is limited with brew however.

I absolutely love DH and DK tanks because they have an ability that places all the enemies on each other in a single spot perfect for aoe mowdown.

BDK has been the best raid tank in like 80% of the raids over the past 5 years or so, and its often one of the best M+ tanks unless very undertuned.

War and druid are both good as mitigation tanks, so when that’s desirable they’re strong.

Any meta built around kiting favors DH tank (e.g., SL season 1 when things hit so hard you had to kite them in high keys).

Monks are occasionally raid meta due to stagger. Paladins are rarely the meta.

But really just play what you like, if you’re not playing at the absolute top end of mythic raiding or very high end keys (i.e. like 20+) it doesn’t really matter as much as skill and execution.

The one you enjoy playing, because even if its meta playing one you dislike won’t be fun and will be an immediate drop once it stops being the meta

If you like it, you’re more likely to stick with it.
