Best Gaming Keyboard

Hi there, thoughts ?

mechanical keyboard. i like adding my own switches and keycaps to them.

I personally enjoy my SteelSeries keyboard. My keyboard has all of the extra buttons on it for my macros and such which is great!

Got it as a Christmas present last year from the folks I live with!

First of all, I would say that if possible you should try to find a local computer store where they have a handful of popular keyboard models out on display, and hopefully the keyboards are all functional and not too disgusting from other people doing god knows what with them.

That’s because a keyboard is one thing where preference comes into play. It’s more like picking out shoes or a jacket compared to picking out other computer components. One keyboard isn’t necessarily “better” than another. The “best” keyboard, is the one that works best for you.

Some important considerations are:

Do you prefer an attached wrist rest? This can change the angle of your wrist compared to using a keyboard without a wrist rest. For me, I prefer the wrist rest because it keeps my wrist more straight, which for me is better than having my wrist kinked-back, especially when it comes to long marathon gaming sessions at the beginning of the expansion and the beginning of each season.

It’s also important to understand the different types of keyboards. The two major types are Mechanical keyboards and Membrane keyboards.

Generally speaking, Mechanical keyboards tend to cost more because they are more complex in how they function and are more expensive to manufacture. Each key has an actual mechanical switch, hence the name. They can offer more customization options such as replaceable keys, etc. Different types of mechanical keys can have a different feel to them, etc.

In contrast, Membrane keyboards are more simple in how they function. Instead of complex mechanical keys, you have a simple membrane sheet with a dome in the membrane for each key. When you press a key, it compresses the dome, and a keypress is registered. As a result, most cheaper keyboards are membrane keyboards.

Many will give an automatic knee-jerk recommendation to get a Mechanical keyboard. What is important to understand however is that even though Membrane keyboard technology dominates the cheaper keyboards, that does not automatically mean that Mechanical keyboards are “better”. They are just different. Some of the best gaming keyboards ever made were Membrane keyboards (Logitech G15, etc) and there are still many high-end Membrane keyboard options on the market (Corsair K55 for example).

The bottom line is that the keys on a Mechanical keyboard will have a totally different feel than the keys on a Membrane keyboard, and again, not necessarily in a way that is better; just different. Don’t feel like you need to limit yourself to only looking at Mechanical keyboards. I personally prefer a quality Membrane keyboard because in general a Membrane keyboard will have more resistance to the initial key-press. I like to be able to rest my fingers on the key-caps, with the keys themselves actually supporting the weight of my fingers, without the key pressing. On every Mechanical keyboard I tried, none of them had enough resistance to let me rest my fingers on the keys without pressing them unintentionally.

If you don’t have anywhere where you can actually try some keyboards, then at least buy it from somewhere that does free returns, and don’t be afraid to send it back if it isn’t making you happy.
