I’m thinking about having a go at tanking. I’ve mostly been a dps player (with a little bit of healing), looking for recommendations on which class to start out with.
They’re honestly all simple, just pick one that you like the most. That you connect with and play it…there’s really no need to get into the weeds with tank choice
I would go with warrior cuz why not, they are doing good
Death Knights are quite independent and you passively heal while doing damage.
pally or druid are the easiest but do what you want or like.
They all play differently. You should go for class fantasy and what you like above all else.
That being said, warrior is top notch lately. I have played prot warrior for over a decade and like it the most.
Brewmaster monk for the easiest and most forgiving tank experience.
Bear is easy to learn but, as it’s currently tuned, you’ll hit a ceiling from the limitation of the spec.
Brew monk has a really good flow after 10.0.5 and can take you into harder content with a higher skill cap to learn how to maximize it.
Prot pally is pretty solid, but still has it’s moments where it feels like you can get globaled in some packs.
Prot warrior is like a 3 button rotation with a little room for skills to shine, and will be the most survivable tank although not the most inspiring to play.
Vdh is in a decent spot and has the mobility to kited when needed, and decent survivability on average.
I haven’t tried DK personally this xpack. Some people say they’re unkillable, but it depends on the player. I’ve been in groups where the Bdk would fall over dead in 2 seconds on a boss pull, and others the tank could stand there through pure armageddon and not flinch.
Right now - warrior
Most other times - guardian druid
But play what you like, they’re all viable unless you’re doing super high mythic plus keys, like over 25
Thanks. I had read that they were good, but I take it with a grain of salt.
Is it difficult to play them well though?
I usually main a destro warlock, and while they’re not as good now as previously, one good thing about them is they’re not very hard to play well.
I’d normally advise Bear cause they’re really simple, its why its my go-to Tank as well normally, which makes it a lot easier to pay attention to everything else going on.
But Blizz fumbled their talent rework so they’re pretty terrible right now.
Second in line in terms of simplicity is probably Warrior so i’d go with that.
True, I’d be playing with training wheels and doubt I’d be trying anything but low keys lol
Easiest tank to pickup and learn likely is Bear and Paladin.
Both are pretty straightforward and traditional.
Blood DK is likely most difficult to play well do to resource management and mitigation style.
I found Paladin tanking to be the easiest while leveling. Being able to throw the shield to gain initial aggro was really helpful to me.
i really liked dk
i used to tank prot war and fell out of love for a while and dk got me back into it a bit
Bear druid is the most entry level tank of them all.
Maybe bear? It’s not doing great right now but it’s simple (I think).
Paladin, Monk, and Warrior are all pretty heavy on button priorities/defensives. You’ll be active on the GCD non-stop. It can be pretty chaotic if you’re not used to it.
Personally, I’d avoid Monk, always felt the most awkward and complex to play properly to me. Bear might be the easiest, although rather weak atm. Honestly just try them out and play the one that feels the best. You’ll learn best when you enjoy it.
Druid is easily the tank spec on training wheels. Do not pay any attention to those trying to argue spec viability because you are not going to be doing content where those concerns are even remotely valid.
Druid also gives you all other roles to pivot to if tanking isnt for you. Paladin is the next best easy choice
Avoid DK and monk. Both tanks rely on higher skill levels to compently play. No tank is actually hard, but for a beginner it isnt advised.
You must be kidding. Prot war has so many buttons that needs to be pressed if someone wants to play it properly.
