Benthic Nerf?

Was curious to see in the blue notes the Rise of Azshara update that Benthic gear is only able to be upgraded to 425, I could have sworn that previous announcements said it could be upgraded to 430 (EP Heroic equivalent)

Thoughts? Was there any previous mention of this? Any one know how it has been on PBE?

I don’t mind the change, but it doesn’t affect me. Personally I think allowing say 3 pieces to be upgraded to 435 and the rest to 425 would be a nice middle ground to not remove heroic raiding as a legitimate gearing option.

Yeah I just thought it was strange and out of nowhere. Personally I thought it a bit strange when they initially set it to Heroic levels but it’s weird how they haven’t really been too transparent about lowering it.

I’m all for mechanisms to help fill in gaps left by poor RNG, so I’d be fine with being able to equip one or two pieces of high end gear obtained through world content. But if you’re not participating in higher end content, there’s no reason or need to have full Normal, let alone Heroic level gear.

It was a two-fold change as well, before the upgrade was an item that were also bind on account so you could farm with alts to upgrade other character’s items. Now that part is a NPC who upgrades it like the Valor guy from MoP. Benthic tokens are still Bind on Account, its just the upgrade part is per character.

They really are not very transparent on much of anything they do.

I’m happy with the change. Was worried they’d continue to stomp on Heroic raiding like they have been all expansion, making it virtually pointless for gearing.

How is it a nerf if it isn’t even live yet?

Oh? Can you upgrade the tokens and transfer them? Or can you just literally not upgrade gear for alts now?

The term just means to make weak or less effective. Things can be nerfed on PBE.

No, you can only upgrade actual gear pieces, not tokens.

The way it currently is on PBE, I’m pretty sure alts have to farm their own manapearls. You can still send them all the 385s you want though (in most slots).

Wow, that seems like a significant change to the system considering they were talking about “gearing your alts” before.

This is a terrible argument when Ilvl scaling has been added to the game. You should hop on the PTR and test the new zones. Ilvl 400 gear will have a somewhat tougher time surviving. Unless of course they have decided to tone the mobs, which as of last night, they had not.

Except we should understand that EVERYTHING on a test server is in flux and could be changed. Assuming that it was set in stone was a mistake.

I think we all do understand that, it’s just surprising that it came out of the blue.
Blizzard has been making a lot of higher gear accessible for lower difficulty content this expansion, it just seem perculiar that just before release they would suddenly drop it without much warning.

Usually you would see a PBE hotfix first and then it would sit on there for a bit.

I’d confirm on the PTR before taking the patch notes as gospel. Not like those are ever wrong…

What arguement is terrible? I stated an opinion. Also lvl scsling has been in the game since legion so im not sure how that changes things. Just because the mobs in that zone are tougher? So what? Mobs in Suramar were wrecking people at the beginning of Legion. Argus mobs did the same 7.3. How is this any different?

We’re going to a new zone that is supposed to be dangerous. You shouldn’t be able to steamroll mobs in a place that is, by design, supposed to be a challenge.
