I have several toons all geared to over 400 which I spent a lot of time leveling up. Now Blizzard tells me that all that was wasted and that I need to farm endless manapearls so I can start leveling my gear again at 385. At about 260 manapearls required to level each piece of gear for each toon … well that’s a lot of manapearls that I’m not willing to farm. If they let me start Benthic at the level my gear is now I’d be OK with that but I’m not going to level my gear twice. Bye Blizz.
You can also raid and run mythics with the ilvl increase starting Tuesday. You don’t have to farm manapearls at all.
Edit: Also I am assuming either this is an alt since you haven’t done either raiding or mythics above heroic since SoO or you are just living off the titanforging from world quests?

Mission failed, we’ll get em next time.
But seriously, catch up gear has been a part of WoW since BC.
Might be true, but it has gotten to be where catchup gear is a lot more like entry gear then catching up. Not that I personally mind getting entry level raid gear for free. Just I can’t lie and say that it hasn’t progressed beyond just enough gear to help you catch up with friends.
It’s almost like Benthic gear is meant as catchup gear, and not for people who are already geared. gasp
Benthic is not catch-up gear. It’s an entirely separate progression path allowing players to get 425 BiS items by solo’ing world quests.
Then don’t use it? Tuesday is only a short time away from us.
I’m a fresh alt and I’m pretty thankful for Benthic gear. I don’t have to go through the lower levle mythic grind as much as before.
I mean, it is called a Catch Up mechanic for a reason.
It’s like 25 pearls for a 400 piece. Only 20 if you already have the benthic piece (which you get from a lot of drops/quests) on top of that you already get given one at 400 when you first enter Nazjatar.
Some of the pieces people are already saying are better than 445 mythic pieces when only 425 because of how strong the proc effect is on them. Clearly they are more than worth it.
How easy do you want gear upgrading to get? You have a definite source of gear at almost heroic level, most of which are better due to their bonus effects. Yet you still want it to be easier?
What do you want to do for the rest of the patch? It doesn’t look like you’re a raider, nor a PvPer. At least here you have a definable progression path for your gear that will last you a few months instead of waiting around for the next Darkshore quest to appear.
It can be both catch up and end game gear. Nobody made a rule that it can’t be both. No one did, right?
since i can mail to my recent 120 tons is obvious it is a catch-up mechanic too
If you’re already geared you are not the target audience for Benthic gear, unless you have alts. Nice to drop an alt straight into 385 gear
Benthic gear is great for smart players and horrible for dumb players. If you don’t have sockets in at least 6 pieces of your gear, you’re doing it wrong.
I am approaching normal raid ilvls for the new raid eternal palace.
Another few weeks the raid and mechagon dungeon will just be a sight seeing spot for me.
Thanks for contributing to the rng madness
Reporting in!
385 Benthic is great.
It’s the fact that it can be upgraded to 425 with little or no effort before the raid even opens that makes it a dumb system.
Haha OP is saying that simply getting A piece is robbery. I’m not sure they would be interested in rolling for sockets with the correct bonus
But I totally agree. For any player who will be raiding etc not rolling for good bracers/belt/boots/gloves should probably look into doing so.
Personally I’m happy with using my pearls for the toys/pets with the odd pieces for alts (simply for the xmog)
I honestly don’t have the time, nor the desire to farm pearls each day to roll for the right piece and then improve it.
If there wasn’t a cap on the daily number through arbitrary means like WQs sure, but with WQs as the only real source outside of daily rares and luck? I’ll take a pass lol.
Catch up gear has been a thing since Vanilla.
The Epic dungeon set upgrades are the first big catch mechanic that comes to mind.
Tier 0.5 wasn’t a catch up mechanic. It was a long, hard and challenging quest line creating a gear progression path separate from raiding. If you were a raider you would catch up in Ony/MC/BWL, not get 0.5.
Catch up gear like in BfA didn’t become a thing until Legion. In TBC and WotLK there were Valor points, but that stuff was always below current content and rarely BiS, could never randomly socket, and not obtainable just by doing solo world quests. You had to at least do heroic dungeons or raid.
This game has become such a joke now that Blizz made a separate progression path to Heroic quality raid gear simply by doing solo world quests.
