This isn’t World of Groupcraft or Guildcraft. A community involves more than just the people you group with, it’s an entire server. Layering divides people among layers that have populations the size of servers, and then shuffles them. This is CRZ, only instead of zones transitions causing the player to shift, relogging and continent transitions cause it. Like CRZ, this drastically reduces the chances of seeing the same person twice as you level.
Different implementation, same result. A layer is a server in all but name.
Assume they nail the tech (I doubt they will), the problem I have is that the layers are only constant per-play session (if you don’t join a party with people in another layers). Disconnect or logout, you are playing with a different group of people.
The real problem is that they are packing the servers with levels of people that are not-vanilla like. A 12k server pop. (layered or not) creates a bad experience.
I just thought of this…will the zone chats be linked across all shar…layers? Cos like if I’m questing and hit a bump and need help, what if there is nobody in MY shar…layer to help, but someone else in a different phas…layer is in the same situation? If I shout out in /1 will the entire SERVER hear my plea?
I think you can communicate with anyone on your server. From my short experience on the stress test, that seemed to be how it worked, but I could be mistaken.
What people are seeing on the beta isn’t layering. It’s a bug that devs are working on that they’ve already posted about. I do wish people like you would stop bringing this up.
Again I wish people like you would stop with this false problems.
Blizz devs have already posted about this and confirmed none of it is layering. It has to do with how entities are currently being handled which they are looking to fix. IT has 0 to do with layering.
incorrect.
When you travel in the world and enter a new zone then you can be moved into a new phase.
Sharding and Layering are the same thing.
The only difference is that Sharding is when servers are linked and they share zones and regarding Layering then its only one server but you use the same principal.
I’m going to call BS on this unless you have a source. Unless they have sharding or phasing active on the servers, layering is the only tech that’s juggling multiple populations, and the only tech that would cause a player to see two different sets of people on continent transition.
Thats a dramatic way of thinking how the system would work. In Guild Wars 2 it shows up on the side of the screen and stays there for 5 minutes… it doesn’t interfere with anything.
But thank you for your comment and to the other three people who actually posted about the topic…
it’s not transitioning. it’s the entities not being shown correctly. Again not layering and I honestly don’t care about how you feel. It’s a fact that you can look up.
They need to assign you a layer on login for the day, resets every 24 hours. Until the reset any login/log out, just returns you to your assigned layer. Leaving a group should also return you to your layer so you cannot hop between.
This would help (not solve) issues with resource nodes, mobs, and abusing the mechanic to flee pvp/gankers.
Well to start, CRZ pulls from multiple different realms to combine the population into one zone. Layering does the exact opposite and splits an overpopulated continent into more than one instance of it
Plus how literally every single blizzard rep explained it
