I did, and it wasn’t even my job to yet lol. It was just that just that often and easy to see in trade/realm forums on a daily basis. People were always eager to call out whoever they could for their wrongdoings and let the world know of their sins.
If you gave me one week I could tell you top 100 of Skullcrusher’s most wanted/infamous, what they did, when, and how long their forums post was about what they did. And yes I heard about it in trade ALL DAY every single day for the entirety of Vanilla because the community was that tight back then. People ate that news like candy because we loved it. Why did I recall so much about my realms toxic players you ask?
Yep. Now as an adult I can listen to incoherent ramblings of imbeciles irl (or on the forums in this case ) just fine and not have to resort to violence, self-harm, or speaking to someone’s manager… unlike today’s youth.
I’m not going to defend trolls or anything like that (we all know they can do that on their own), but I see them as necessary as a forest fire. Sure it may harm and endanger the wildlife, but necessary for stronger more fertile earth to continue the cycle of life and give birth to a stronger generation of plants.
However, I do see how this opinion is frowned upon in today’s soft society, and in Acti-Blizzard’s heavy restrictions. This still does not change my chaotic neutral opinion that hostility in humans is just as important as kindness, and human nature will weed out the ones we do not need automatically due to our handed down social skills and competitive nature. Today’s youth, however, is very out of the loop and do not learn basic social skills at a young age leading to anxiety filled depressed teens that are lead to do terrible things as adults because they didn’t know how to deal with people who won’t pamper them.
Without hostility, we are basically left with the world of 1993’s Demolition Man, (this movie is most likely made before you were born so look it up.) and we can all agree that a world without swearing, meat, beer, music, or toilet paper is not a world anyone would want to live in.

I wouldn’t exactly say that modern day kids are sheltered from abuse in video games. Games like LoL, Fortnite and CoD are even more toxic than WoW. I do recall tanking dungeons as a kid and getting screamed at, kicked and whispered death threats whenever I made a mistake. Have to admit that it did teach me to grow thicker skin.
Sure, I just don’t expect to see many of them. Classic will almost entirely appeal to either people who played classic or at least some version of WoW.
One of my earliest memories of wow was a helpful player I ran into while questing through Elwynn forest who gave me 4 silk bags to help me early on. It certainly wasn’t necessary but it was one of my many fond memories. Doing what you can to be nice to other players and helpful to the newbies will go along way to making the game enjoyable for yourselves and others,
Yeah, the problem is that video games that afford relative anonymity and nothing in the way of tangible consequences attract the socially-retarded like moths to the flame.
There are two things I remember from when I began early on.
I started as a NE Priest in open beta or maybe slightly before, dementia, but my friend fell off of Teldrassil near the satyr NPC at the northern portion of the 6-10 are. I tried to cast resurrection on him (he was on the next lowest branch I think). Apparently this was too far. I accidentally fell off and died… so I brought my wisp and tried reviving in air to die again… I can’t remember how many deaths we made to reach the bottom (I was unaware of the function of the spirit healers). We than began the very long swim to Rut’Theran Village (I don’t believe I knew what my hearthstone was)… It took forever. If either of us had only known… so much time that could have been saved.
I remember getting Fade later on. I would run around with my friend who is a Rogue. I would Fade and try to follow him to be attacked… I was quite perturbed and thought the ability was bugged. It said it lasts for x seconds, says it reduces my threat to enemies, and makes me transparent! “How are they still attacking me?! Stealth makes you transparent! Shadowmeld makes you transparent. What. The. Hell. Is. Going. On!!! ” It took me some time to learn about mob aggro - the previous MMO I played monsters just attacked the nearest target. There was not a threat list.
I thought of another time - when I died near a group of monsters, they appeared when I got near my corpse. I had remembered reading earlier in the game’s development that monsters would attack your ghost and kill you. I had quite the time trying to navigate to prevent my ghosts death (What happens when your ghost dies?!?!) from the corpse camping gnolls . Eventually I did a kamikaze run to my corpse and none of them attacked me! Until I resurrected.
I think I’ve also tried mining, herbing, and loot chests/corpses as a ghost… I remember severe loot lag and being crouched over for an eternity… I remember the game telling me I couldn’t loot a mob I killed because that would be stealing… I thought I was going to be in some big trouble and I didn’t even know what I did…
There is a vast difference between the attitude of someone new and with genuine interest to learn the game, and someone who waddles into this forum from GD to cause waves.
Eh, you don’t have to be kind, just Courteous, world of difference between those two.
Not saying i’m not going out of my to help random people i’ll never meet again, because i do that, but you can’t help everyone so just help who you can, and those who are honest to themselves about being better.
See, that’s not kindness to me that’s just you not being a jerk. Being kind is telling them how what to do, giving them items they didn’t earn and so forth. Just telling them where something is, and how to get it is you just being a decent guy not kind, nor courteous, just not being a jerk lol.
