Beginner PvP

Hello,

I’d like to try PvP, but I am a total noob. There are so many different things to do, I can’t figure out where to start. Is there a guide somewhere that explains what the difference between arenas, battlegrounds and solo shuffle is?

Battlegrounds are large groups fighting over objectives. 10-15 players on each team.

Epic Battlegrounds are larger scale battlegrounds, with 40 players per team.

Arenas are small teams fighting in a deathmatch. They can be either 2v2, or 3v3.

Solo shuffle is 3v3 arena, but with a twist. There are 6 rounds to a game, and each round the players are “shuffled” into different teams. You won’t have the same team twice in any of the 6 rounds.

There are also Rated Battlegrounds, which is 10v10 regardless of the base battleground’s rules.

As far as beginner pvp goes, battlegrounds are probably the place to go. You just queue into them using the pvp menu (H key by default). They don’t require advanced pvp knowledge, but are a good place to learn about pvp in the game as well as learning what spells and abilities other classes besides yours are able to use.

Game modes vary between different battlegrounds, but are generally overall simple concepts such as capture the flag and king of the hill.

Most important thing to keep in mind is don’t get tilted. You will get absolutely deleted many times while you learn. Just use it as a learning experience instead of a negative one. Try to figure out what happened to you, and figure out with your own abilities what you can do differently next time. There will also be many times where even if you’ve been doing it for years, you’ll still get destroyed. Sometimes it just happens.

Thank you for the explanation! Is there an ilvl requirement for anything?

I’m only around 220-230.

I’ll definitely check out battlegrounds first!

There are no ilvl requirements, but at your 220-230, expect to be targeted and killed frequently. Most players will be 50-70 ilvl higher than you are.

Edit: Once Dragonflight comes into play, you will be on an even playing field as far as gear goes with the rest of the player base. We’ll all be starting fresh again.

LOL, oh no!

I guess it will be good practice for DF.

With the Anniversary event going on right now, there’s the Korrak’s Revenge option. (You can queue for it like the other battlegrounds.) It’s an older version of the Epic battleground AV, with heavy objective lean, so it’s an easy way to start. It also attracts people who don’t usually PvP, so there will be other new to PvP players around as well.
