It starts with MoP, the Panda expansion. But the last Raid of MoP was Siege of Orgrimmar, an Orc-themed Raid that was the direct narrative cause of Warlorcs of Draenor, an Orc-themed expansion.
Then the last Raid of Warlorcs was Hellfire Citadel, a Demon-themed Raid. That Raid in itself was the direct narrative cause of Legion, the Demon expansion.
Then that big story ends because Antorus isn’t ship-themed and doesn’t cause BfA lol
I dig the tongue n cheek stuff, but (adjusts my wide brimmed glasses) sargeras’ sword did play a massive role in BFA. At least as a convenient plot device for the jailer…lol
Personally, I wouldn’t say BfA is part of the same story. I would say BfA is a sequel to the Pandamonium saga.
The reason being that there isn’t a smooth transition Raid between Legion and BfA.
The thing that makes it all the same story is that while SoO is objectively the last Raid of MoP, you could think of it as the first Raid of Warlorcs, narratively speaking.
The same for Hellfire Citadel. Objectively, it’s the last Raid of Warlorcs, but narratively, you could think of it as the first Raid of Legion.
I don’t feel like it’s reasonable to consider Antorus as the narrative first Raid of BfA. There’s a big shift in tone, theme and aesthetics. That’s why I wouldn’t consider BfA as part of the Pandamonium Saga
No, although Sylvanas does blame the events of Legion for her line of thinking leading into the burning of Teldrassil. It’s a lie but it does kind of tie in.
I think the ending raid cinematic drives the narrative forward. Thrusting us back into Azeroth. Much like the sword.
I do think there’s is an “epilogue” sensibility in it, though, which is congruent with what I believe you’re proposing, in that the sword just creates a convenient narrative cover for the War of Thorns, which kicks off the main, initial plot of BFA
Obviously this is all subjective, and we can see things differently.
But to me, what makes MoP, Warlorcs and Legion all part of the same story is that it feels like the next expansion starts while the previous one is still going. Siege of Orgrimmar feels like it’s part of MoP and Warlorcs at the same time. Hell Fried Chicken feels like it’s part of Warlorcs and Legion at the same time.
That feeling of uninterrupted continuity is what makes it all a saga to me
A lot of WoW’s story is loosely linked by 1 thread but the meat of the stories aren’t related most of the time.
Thrall making Garrosh Warchief in Cata lead to him having the power to cause the conflict in MoP, which leads to WoD when he fails and opts to abuse time travel shenanigans instead, which leads to Legion because of the link between the 2 realities.
That’s a throughline for 4 expansions in a row.
And yet, Cata has absolutely nothing to do with MoP, MoP has absolutely nothing to do with anything else, and only WoD and Legion actually feed into each other narratively beyond the trigger technically being pulled way back in Cata.
(you could also argue that BfA and Shadowlands are connected because Garrosh’s actions are what lead to Sylvanas being able to become Warchief, but I feel it’s already pretty clear this particularl thread is a pretty loose one. It’s there, but it doesn’t do anything.)
