You might crit and still not kill it and hit yourself for 7000 damage and die. Like I just did.

Nice. SWD is like Russian Roulette at this point, especially if you trigger the PvP-absorb trinket when they drop below 25%.
I had used SW:D to defeat my opponent in a duel, only for the returned damage (which happened because my target didn’t die!) to kill me and cause a corpse run.

I SW:D’d Rezan earlier when he was at 5% HP. I went from 18k hp to ~10k and had no idea what happened. I kinda like it.
I’ve been blasting people for 4k SWDs as Holy and nearly twice as much on Shadow and it’s been good times.
Be wary using it on the last boss in Shrine with the debuff

The bigger problem is when you SW:D a low-level target, since the damage scales exponentially. If that target doesn’t die right away, then you’ll one-shot yourself.

Besides the lul factor, i dont see how SW:D is usefull outside of pvp and maybe solo world content as an execute. It has no effect on healing whatsoever, and when used during an execute/burn phase on a boss, you run the risk of blowing your own brains out with seemingly no up side, as it doesnt heal through atonement. I wonder if they will change it in the future.
It will be more useful with the leggo that does allow it to heal
If you get the SW:D talent in row, 1 it’s actually pretty good to use it in add fights and dungeons for insanity generation (40 insanity if the target dies after 6 seconds) - as long as you don’t kill yourself, that is.
Oh, for shadow it makes sense, i’m talking about the healing specs, with disc in particular. I probably should have clarified.
I use it in keys for the xtra dps. No it doesnt heal but dps is dps and part of your job is to do dps.
the lego people are talking about in beta allowing swd to heal is only usable below 20%
Here’s a crazy idea.
What if baseline or conduit or leggo etc. SW:D either removes the damage backlash onto yourself completely or make it only max 10% of the damage done or 10% of your max HP and then give instead a debuff that reduces healing received by 50% or something for 6 sec or w/e.
Point being, give an alternative debuff instead of just 100% damage backlash. I think a healing received debuff would fit thematically as Death = opposite of life and as a priest, we can heal in all specs so its just a delay at worse.

Death’s Touch
Touch of Death
Death’s Embrace
etc.
i like the SWD backlash. risk v reward. Live a little dangerously.
But on the topic of the lego kiss of death i think it was called, they needed to make swd in its current weakened state heal with atonement as is, and the leggo continue to lower the cd and buff swd below 20%
If the leggo isnt possible then im happy for it to be scrapped and swd as is work with atonement.
