I don’t understand why they don’t let random battlegrounds count towards vault progress.

Because then they would have to let regular/heroic dungeons count towards vault progress.

LFR players can do LFR for a LFR-quality piece, right? Why can’t BG players at least get Unranked conquest stuff for unranked battlegrounds?

LFR is still end game content. You can’t compare BGs to LFR. BGs if anything are comparable to normal/heroic dungeons.
