Basic ping question

Hi all,

Not the most tech savvy out there, but is there anything I can do to get a better ping ? My ping is at around 85, which I understand is considered bad.

However when I test my ping with speedtest, it’s 14.

What explains the difference ? the fact that I am not pinging the same servers ? Maybe I am doomed to have a high ping because I want to play on an active RP server and both MG and WrA are on the west coast I think and I am in eastern canada.

Just wanted to see if there is anything I can do to have better ping.

Thanks in advance

Ping is primarily determined by distance from you to the location. It can be impacted by the servers that your connection takes along the way, but generally those play a small part and you’d only be looking at that if there was a problem you were trying to fix, like your ping was much higher than the distance indicates it should be.

When you run a speedtest, the test will typically pick the closest available server to you. So the 14 ping is how long it takes you to get to, say, toronto.

The west coast servers are in LA. 85 ping is pretty normal for going from the east to the west coast, and I wouldn’t call it a bad ping. It is at most slightly high, and you would likely only notice something like that in high level arena play or similar. 99% of people and activities, the difference between ~85 ping and ~55 ping is not going to be noticed.

If you played on a chicago based server, your ping would likely be ~30-40 points lower or so.

You can try using a VPN - this would route your traffic a different way. It might be that your “perfect” ping is say 70, but it’s going up to 85 because your ISP routes your traffic in a less than ideal path, so using a VPN might drop it a little. But like I mentioned before, going from 85 to ~70 or whatever is not likely to have any noticeable impact.
