any help appreciated - (the icon next to the map that you click on to move bars or acjust settings has gone away)

/bt I think is the slash command for bringing up the BarTender settings. It may have a show/hide minimap icon option to bring your button back.

/bt4 is the correct command for the options UI.
If the minimap icon has disappeared, check the settings for any minimap addon you use as well. I know SexyMap for example had an overide for many of those buttons/icons.
