Balance Help

Would anyone mind giving me an overview of bow to balance?

I have no idea why but even after going through guides on balance I am just… not doing well?

I do just fine with other casters, but balance just isn’t clicking in my head.

I know you want to force inspirations, etc – but it feels clunky to me?

how about a link to logs so we can see where you’re actually doing poorly?? Probably get you a lot better info than random pointers.

Read the rotation sections in the guides thoroughly and make sure you understand them.

When and how to put our dots out is not simple, and this is the main thing I see people messing up in dungeons. Either wasting too much time dotting when stuff isn’t going to live, or not dotting the right stuff in right eclipses, etc.

Sim your character at raidbots site and sit on a dummy until you can replicate the dps. Balance single target is about 10x easier than our various AOE priorities though.

Balance dots are dynamic and do not snap shot. Having dot uptime (assuming its not gonna get whacked instantly) is more important than when you apply them in almost all scenarios.

Incorrect. The latest guides and sims make it quite clear that on certain target numbers, we shouldn’t be moonfiring at all during lunar.

Target numbers, time to live, where you’re at in your eclipse, and what eclipse you’re in. These all impact on when (and what) to dot.

I don’t know what you’re trying to say in incorrect. Balance dots are dynamic and don’t snapshot (like feral bleeds) and you should definitely try to get as close to 100% uptime as possible (unless the mob is going to die quickly, which i mentioned in previous post).

Do you understand why the guides say that and what the reasoning is? and that number is 5. How many pulls in this expansion have over 5 mobs?

almost as if i said

Almost every pull with a good tank.

Never said dots don’t snapshot. But there’s significantly more complexity to our dot priotities than “having dot uptime”.

No. this just simply isn’t true. This isnt the old M+ days in that tanks pull entire rooms and AoE it down. Not in non trivial content at least. If you look at a dungeon such as HoA, you dont have any pulls over 5 mobs (im excluding the groundskeepers because they literally dont matter).

Mists has zero pulls over 5 mobs that dont include similar trivial adds that dont matter.

PF has 0, NW would have none if it werent for blight bags and spare parts, ToP is similar because of refuse and shackled souls. SD has a few but they die pretty quick as well.

So this leave DoS with the only dungeon that has frequent over 5 mob pulls, and thats because of the ring and ardenweald area.

Not really. Its not rocket surgery and you saying things like

makes it appear overly complicated. in AoE priority #1 is keep starfall up, #2 is keep sunfire up. #3 is cast Starfire in lunar eclipse. The rest is negligible at best.

First of all, the number isn’t 5. Here it is direct from the guide:

So you’re incorrect about dot application rules in dungeons.

Or perhaps you meant at what point we only spam starfire in lunar? Or when we only spam starfire in solar?

Nope, can’t be those points you were trying to make, as those break-points are 6 and 8 targets and have nothing to do with moonfiring in lunar, which is what you were trying to pick at.

Once again, you are incorrect, stop spreading the wrong information. When (and what) to dot has changed significantly and this needs to be managed on every pull to maximize dps (even with a tank who single-pulls a 3 mob pack).

It makes a significant difference, and the balance druid who just thinks they need to dot everything is still going to be faffing around without having done any real damage when the pack dies. I see it all the time and get messages asking how I do twice their damage. It’s from following the guide and dotting about a third as much as clueless people do.

So before you start trying to explain to me why the guide says what you thought it did (wrong), let’s just establish the fact that you don’t actually know what it says, or what you’re talking about.

Note: there is a ton of other rotational info in the guide. The OP (and you) should both get familiar with it.

Let me help you out my dude:

https://www.dreamgrove.gg/balance/2020-12-08-9.0_faq/

while Icy Veins has gotten better over the years, dreamgrove and the associated discord are the defacto experts on the class. Section 14 is AoE priority.

/facepalm. This really isn’t difficult. You may be over analyzing it make yourself somehow feel that you’re a better player than you actually are, but its simply not the case. Easy game is easy, stop trying to make it hard.

15. How do I play with BoAT?

  • Always pool so that you enter a new Eclipse with enough Astral Power to chain 3 Starsurges.
  • If this means you overcap that is fine and expected.

Wasting Astral Power so you can fit in a Starsurge with only 8% extra crit chance seems extremely suspect. I question this Dreamgrove FAQ

Neat! You should definitely head over to the dream grove discord and tell them how crap their info is! While your at it swing by wowhead as well since the same guy is writing their balance guides.

But before you do I would implore you to ponder 1 question. What do you think is more damage over the length of a fight: A star surge at the tail end of an eclipse or one at the beginning with additional crit chance as well as buffing every filler spell you’re going to cast over the length of that eclipse???

It looks like if done properly you can fit in a 3rd Starsurge with 2sec left on BoaT, giving it 16% extra crit instead of 8%. I’m still not sure whether it’s worth wasting AP and possible extra Starsurges to get it though

Nice edit lol. Did the lightbulb click on???

I’m inclined to listen to Nevok on this one. Dude’s advice has been helpful in the past.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

I believe the idea of avoiding Moonfire in Lunar is more about the fact that Starfire is too potent to waste the GCDs, not anything about snapshotting. I think Nevok might be misinterpreting the advice.

It just totally depends how long things will live as well as how many targets there are.

On a lot of pulls, playing with other competent dps, your rotation on the pack will simply be getting starfall up, two wraths to enter lunar, 1x sunfire, then spam starfire.

If you waste any time dotting apart from a single sunfire, you’ll do less dps and only just be starting to ramp up as the pack dies. You also gain less from it. You’ll generate less AP and be in a worse spot rolling into the next pack.

He’s right that the class discords usually have the most accurate guides/info.

However, that dreamgrove post is…incomplete. It leaves all the information out about how long different packs need to live to be worth dotting in different scenarios.

Even moonfiring packs during solar can be a dps loss if it’s not going to live through the next eclipse and get benefit from the streaking stars window at the start of eclipses. There’s diminishing returns on this, but it’s really valuable having up on the first 2-3 mobs before the DR’s make it drop off too hard.

Let alone wasting time moonfiring during lunar when the pack is going to live like 10 seconds.

Clearly easy game isn’t too easy seeing as you have a single 10 timed and 5 depleted. shrug

Comedy coming from someone that has a bunch of depleted 10s also as well as green and grey parses in CN. shrug
