What were your experiences like and why would you pick one out we the other? I know they’re a different niche, but I think if played correctly they can both perform very well.

Balance druid pvp LOL IRL.
Mage PvP: crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of the women.
Seriously go mage and never ever look back. You will not regret it in pvp, at least in classic.
If you want more mobility pick Druid. If you want more burst pick Mage.
Balance Druid in vanilla PvP is a monster with some of the highest burst potential and extreme mobility. A decently played balance can beat any class. An ignored balance will take out an entire team if it doesn’t oom.
But sheep and counterspell are too op to pass up.
Depends really…
Balance is actually supposed to be fairly strong in pvp during vanilla… The downside, is that so much of vanilla power is tied to your gear, and getting balance druid gear isn’t going to be an easy task, since they’re arguably the single worst overall spec in the game, for pve.
Mages on the other hand, are heavily desired in both pve and pvp. And fairly easy to both play and gear up.
Not quite the answer you where looking for, I’m sure… But it is a pretty sizable factor to consider…
Also, a minor concern to think about is the availability of water… Most caster hybrids have to drink like they should be going to meetings in vanilla… Mages at least can make their own.
Balance is really good for PvP as long as you get NS instead of moonkin form. It might not be as hard as people think to get a raid slot as oomkin. Their dps is fine on shorter fights. Still, I would only roll druid if you don’t mind healing and waiting a long time for spell power gear or if you plan to rank like crazy.
OP Balance Druid pvp video found
Actually, the video says resto pvp. If he didn’t self nerf, his team would /afk out because he would solo the bg.
I remember that vid lol
Lol nah. I’d just heal through the damage on my poorly geared paladin while the dps train ran over the Druid.
Maybe in TBC or something, but not vanilla.
Mages, on the other hand, have always been balls of destruction.
Yeah but for most fights, from what I understand, the single DPS player contributes more damage then the moonkin + it’s aura. I imagine the party makeup for the testing was 4 mages and a moonkin in one party (since auras didn’t effect raids then).
Resto druids were the most god awful things alive in PvP during BC
I played the world’s cheapest comp in 2v2 as a resto druid. Druid/SL lock and druid/mace warrior.
It was honestly a comedy the entire time playing.
I’d say SL/Druid was the worst though. Pillar hump? Pillar hump.
Excuse me? lol

Druids… druids everywhere.
So you’re basing their performance off of 1vX? Uhh…
Mage is one of the best classes in PvP.
Balance is a dumpster fire in every respect.
Go awful OP
Balance in PvP plays almost exactly like the NS/feral hybrid, except you get to press Wrath occasionally when Bash lands. So if you don’t like that, go with mage.
As soon as you go moonkin form, you will be focused down.
Everyone knows not to let a moonkin cast as it will likely proc a starfire stun that also crits for a high number. Mages blend in better.
So it might seem crazy that I’m comparing balance to mage, but balance actually can deal serious damage in PvP in classic. People think it’s a meme spec because it goes oom fast in pve. I do remember globaling people in vanilla with half decent gear and cast a Starfire followed by a Moo fire. I took screenshots of the BGs where I was top KBs.
Yeah it’s hard to get gear as balance in raids, but if you’re okay with healing you won’t have any real competition for T2.5. By the time you get to AQ most caster DPS won’t need BWL gear so you can clean up the leftovers. It’s a long game for sure compared to the mage.
Edit: @Priapis, that’s why you take NS instead of Moonkin form.
