Blizzard seems to be making a number of questionable decisions lately.
The most recent being the banning of multibox software.
Now, I get it, it’s their game, and if they don’t want boxers, theyre free to make it against TOS, and the boxers could move to another game.
But, from a financial standpoint, this seems like a bad call.
This will obviously cause multiboxers to quit and move to other games.
And think about that.
If a multiboxer quits, Blizzard doesn’t just lose $15/month.
They lose $15/month times the number of accounts the boxer had.
So a 24-man boxer leaving would cost Blizzard $360/month.
And this is just for ONE person leaving. Across the number of boxers that will likely leave, this is a significant financial loss.
Not to mention the fact that they made this announcement before Shadowlands.
Now I respect their integrity for doing this before Shadowlands was released (making it after, when multiboxers buy the expansion and THEN get told they can’t play would be outright evil), from a financial standpoint, this will cause another significant loss of money.
Let’s say all multiboxers only bought, or were going to buy, the base edition of the game ($40).
$40 times 24 accounts is a $960 loss or opportunity cost for ONE multiboxer refunding or not buying it in the first place.
Now muktiplu this by the number of 24-man boxers, and include the smaller boxers with it, and this is a significant financial loss.
Thus, from a financial standpoint, banning multiboxing software is going to hurt Blizzard more than it will help the game.
Multiboxing is NOT botting. Blizzard already made the distinction long ago and made the choice to allow multiboxing, but not botting, in their game.
If they were against multiboxing they should have banned it long ago.
Because think about it: Let’s say a certain number of players are against multiboxing in games. Thus, when Blizzard announced that multiboxing was going to be included in WoW, those players probably QUIT. Now, is getting rid of multiboxing now going to bring those players back? No! Those players probably moved on to other games and will likely not be aware of Blizzard’s new policy.
Had multiboxing software been banned at the start, the people for multiboxing would have left, yes, but the people against multiboxing would still be playing WoW.
Thus, this decision will only hurt the game and Blizzard financially.
(And no, I’m not a multiboxer. Never have, and too cheap to ever will.)
