Every quest seems to need pickups and the backpack is basically big enough to do one quest at a time if you need to carry food and/or water and you picked up professions in the starter zones as intended.
It’s Classic. Go to the vendor multiple times to sell stuff, save enough to buy a bag from the shop, and if you absolutely need to destroy stuff to hold what’s priority. If you have too many mats run to Orgrimmar and bank them. They are also giving 4 extra bag slots if you sign up for the authenticator.
if you go tailoring you can make a full set of 6 slot bags from junk you pick up while lvling

I mean come on now… You have a hearthstone, mining pick, BS hammer, food, bandages… 25% of the backpack gone immediately. A lvl 8 axe requires another 5 slots just to hold the mats while crafting. All these new crafting materials, scrolls, crates, etc. A 20 slot backpack isn’t cutting it and people are jerks thinking they are going to charge multiple silver for bags that simply doesn’t exist
You don’t have to pick everything up.
That being said a loot filter would be a nice QOL.
WoW forever gives an extra bag slot just for a profession bag. One of the vendors in the starting area sells 6-slot mining, skinning, and herbalism bags for less than half a silver that can hold gathering profession tools and mats.
It was 4 slot and there was no money for it if you trained
