Backpack Organization

Hello, everyone.

I’m new to WoW. I’m currently playing as a draenei paladin in Dragonflight. I checked the “Combine Bags” option so that it looks like I have a large inventory (except for the reagent bag that’s on the side). The problem is that when I click “Clear Bags” (Organize), some items go to the bottom, others stay in the middle, and the rest go near the top of the “inventory”, but they don’t reach the “top”, there’s just a little empty space.

Can you help me configure the bags the way I want?

I would like all the items to be at the top of the inventory from the beginning, and over time and farming, they would fill up from top to bottom. And when I click “Clear Bags” they would just organize among themselves by type, but remain in the same place (top), within the inventory. Was I clear?

The reagent bag on the left is fine, I don’t want to change the reagents automatically going to it, I just want that default for the other items.

I appreciate any help.

Hi, and Welcome to Azeroth!

Yes, you gave a very clear description.

I don’t know the answer exactly, because I don’t use bags that way myself, and my First Rule of Bags is: NEVER hit the Clean-Up button or allow the game to decide ANYTHING about my bags! P

There is a circular bag icon at the top left of your combined bags. If you right-click that, you will get a menu with options, and I would suggest that you turn off Clean-Up Bags wherever it appears. I don’t think the built-in bag UI can do what you want, though.

The devs of WoW decided long ago to leave the UI open for people to arrange their view of the game however they want, using Addons written in Lua that call the API, rather than write a very configurable UI themselves.

So I think your best bet is to install an Addon to customize your bags the way you want.

Bagnon is the biggest and best addon for displaying bags, and I am sure it can help you out here. It has its own options for displaying the contents of bags.

Now, you’re hitting Addons earlier in your WoW career than maybe most people do, and there’s a bit of setup involved, so engage patience. Take a deep breath!

There are two aspects to Addons: 1. Choosing and installing them and 2. Keeping them updated. Most people install an Addon Manager for this. An Addon Manager is a program you install on your PC that installs Addons, and that regularly checks for new versions to update them.

I use WoWUP as my Addon Manager (you can just google it) but most people use the Curseforge app WITHOUT Overwolf. (Don’t ask; just avoid the version with Overwolf).

Once you have installed your Addon Manager, you can just ask it to search for and install Bagnon.

This is a HUGE video that tells a beginner lots and lots of things about WoW that you will want to learn. It’s two hours long, but broken up into 1-2 minute chapters introducing each sublect. I have teed it up to the section on Addons, and it will lead you through installing the Curseforge Addon Manager

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnzdeoSMkvM&t=6259s

It’s worth bookmarking that video, or maybe even watching chunks of it now that mean something to you, because there’s a LOT of great information there!

Once you have installed Bagnon, you can get up its configuration options by typing

/bagnon

into your chat box or by

  • hitting Esc to get up your Game Menu
  • Choosing Interface
  • Hitting the Addons tab at the top right

and selecting Bagnon in the list.

PLEASE ask again if you hit a problem with any of this.

P.S. Afterthought

If you install an Addon Manager, that’s the hard bit done, so you might be tempted to install ALL the addons 'cos they all seem to do AMAZING things!

Um.

Take it slow, and keep control of your addons. You may suddenly see strange things happening that you do not understand, did not want, and do not control. I always suggest that you install addons one by one - install one, learn it, understand it - then add one more, learn it, understand it. If you add 15 together like a kid in a candy store, the result will be … cacophanous!

Remember that you can also remove addons with your Addon Manager, and you can disable them one by one in the Addons section of your Game Menu.

Hello.
Thank you very much.

I will try the tips very slowly. I will be careful with the Addons.

I would like to ask you one more question. I am playing Dragonflight. There is any addon you recommend so that I can find all the missions available to me by area and also, if possible, so that I can do them in the right order? I know it’s difficult to talk about mission order in an open world.

An addon that shows all the missions available to me according to my progress in the Campaign, if possible.

Thank you again.

Sure.

There are two addons that might address the issue of pointing out the appropriate next quest.

To understand the meaning of the difference, I have to give you some context on WoW questing.

In each expansion, the devs provide

  • “levelling” quests, that are designed to take you around the zones, introduce you to the locals, and give you XP to reach the maximum level of the expansion
  • max-level campaign quests, that are intended for people todo after they have completed levelling, and that expand the overall story of the expansion, as we defeat the Big Bads of the lands

BTWQuests is the addon I thought of first. It includes both levelling and max-level campaigns, and is very thorough for both in showing you whereyou are eithin quest chains and feeding you the story in the right order. Along with the core addon BTWQuests, you will want to download its data for each expansion that you are interested in separately, so you would want BTWQuests and BTWQuests:Dragonflight

BTWQuests is the addon I think you are looking for.

There was an addon called Azeroth AutoPilot, which focused on the levelling quests, and specialized in getting you XP as fast as possible. It was VERY prescriptive, and controlled your every move to tell you where to go to get the fastest possible XP for levelling up FAST. Just now, I found that it was abandoned, but has been picked up by a new developer and still exists as Azeroth Pilot Reloaded.

I mention it, but I don’t think it’s the one you are looking for,

As a bonus, I will say that when I am looking for my “next” quest, I go to Wowhead, look up the quest by title and READ THE COMMENTS. Wowhead itself is kind of a framework; the comments are where the good stuff lives.

As a further bonus, and despite my warning about overding addons, now that you’re getting into quest locations, I’m going to recommend the addon TomTom.

When you start reading Wowhead, you will see co-ordinates all over the place. These are map co-ordinates which, oddly, Blizzard never implemented in the game proper. For example, from one Wowhead comment

The Roasted Ram - Entrance at 48.4, 50.0 - The inn closest to the bank, auction house, flight path, many weekly quests, and close to The Artisan’s Market. The most centrally located hearth location.

Once you have installed TomTom, you could type

/way #2112 48.4, 50.0

(or
/way 48.4, 50.0
if you are already in Valdrakken; #'2112 is the area code for Valdrakken, needed if you are not already there)

and TomTom will show you an arrow on top of your screen showing the way.

TomTom doesn’t do anything to your screen apart from showing your coords discreetly below your minimap, and showing the arrow when appropriate, and it doesn’t tend to cause any problems or confusion.

Thank you so much for the tips, friend.
