Back from a big layoff. Ret stat Priority?

Hey guys I’ve just woke up from a 7 year nap and I’m back for Shadowlands.

When I can last remember, stat priority was Str (gems) then Haste to cap >> Mastery>> crit >> Versitilty was new and no one didn’t know how to use it.

Now I come back and gear is interchangeable, NO str gems, and gearing/stat priority is confusing.

Can I get some proper insight?

Right now, our stat priority is basically just “always take the higher ilvl item”. All four stats are almost exactly equally valuable for Ret. It can vary with talents, conduits, or whatever specific gear you have, so it’s worth simming yourself to check. But currently, yeah, our stat priority is basically flat.

When I sim AoE fights, mastery seems to have a higher value than other stats, although they’re all very close on ST. But that might be a quirk of my gear, in particular the fact that I have somehow ended up really skewed toward haste.

The +healing from vers makes it great for rets.

What do you use for sim tools? Is it wise to go and buy BoA star gems?

Instead of using the program like old times you’re able to use a website and addon to load in imports to said website to make it a lot easier to write up scripts for simming.

My last sim had haste at .95 and Verse at .86, everything else in between. So yes the secondary stats are all extremely close.

STR is #1 stat so higher ilvl typically better to go with. Depends on your build but haste/mast are a safe bet most of the time. Focus haste to 20%

I guess I still am sticking to the idea of stacking haste/Crit as much as I can. Currently wowhead states that the order for secondaries is haste>crit>mast>vers. Funny thing is though, my current gear isn’t that at all due to the Venthyr gear I’m wearing and continually upgrading.

But that’s what I’m doing until it’s showing that its craptastic. Once that shows, I’ll start looking for different gear to stack appropriately.

Mastery is most % to stat point boost before diminishing returns. It’s 1:1 with our spenders. Unless building into expurg…even then mastery boosts our spenders more dmg than anything. I’d have to say mastery all the way after you get a baseline haste.

Do you use wowhead or do you actually sim your gear? How can crit outweigh mastery and verse when crit is literally an “chance” stat which means it’s not guaranteed. It’s a high school risk high reward stat.

Mastery and verse are both guaranteed damage increases with Mastery skewed higher for damage and verse more so for survival with damage qualities as well.

I’m not a hardcore raider or anything. I have vowed to have a life outside of WoW…lol

That said, I do not sim my gear to see where I am lacking. I honestly go with what I want. I want a TON of haste, and if I can, a TON of crit. so clearly I am no theory crafter to go by. some of the other people that have responded know WAAAY more than I do.

Depends:

Pve: str, sim the rest. Outside of Venthyr which can use a haste lean because of the HoW boost, whatever sims better is best.

PvP: str > vers > haste > mastery >= crit
