"Azeroth" is not the World's name [Blizzard did an Oopsie]

Except that I’ve stood on the deck of the Vindicaar, looked down and watched the globe rotate… I must be part of the consipiracy.

See you admit it!!!

Impossible! There is only one Elm Street. There are no others.

you are wrong there dude. I don’t know what else to say other than you are categorically wrong.

I wish we still had developers that really, really cared about making an amazing experience of a game, like the ones who made that game.

What?? No. You’re 100% wrong on this and you don’t even know what Azeroth is.

Dude it’s like…this area is Azeroth but then…the whole thing is Azeroth too.

I dont remember the name but i remember reading a book or in game lore when the Draeni landed there. They called it something else but when they arrived the people of the planet called it Azeroth so they followed

Naming has never been consistent even in real life. Also things can have multiple names.

Our planet can be called Earth, Terra, Gaia, whatever. I’m sure other languages have their own word for it too. Earth is also the dirt we can dig up. Terra, is where the word _Terra_in came from. You look up into the sky at night and see the moon. Luna. Or glance off in the corner of your eye at day and see the sun. Sol.

Sol? A lot of people like to say we live in a _Sol_ar system. But I like to think we live in THE Solar System. Named after our star, Sol. The “sun” in the sky is just an object you can refer to whenever you’re on any rocky little planet with a star (or stars). Every other system is just a regular old Star System with ours as the only Solar System.

Same things happen in WC. Orcs come in and see “the kingdom of Azeroth” aka the only kingdom on the planet they’re fighting against, and assume are the biggest power and representative of it. Human footmen cry “for Azeroth” cause they’re literally defending their planet from outworld invaders which causes them to create an alliance of many different kingdoms to finally rally for a true defense.

Now as for Azeroth being the actual god given name for the Titan living inside the planet, by the other titans… that’s a mighty strange coincidence. But I’m not sure how they even came up with that name anyways. Maybe they just named the unborn titan after what the majority of sentient life is calling their planet? Who knows. Or that the origin for the planet’s name came from a now forgotten past history of knowledge of the titans and remained in their tongues despite everyone forgetting where it came from…

WoW is a world of magic where mages can shoot fire out of their fingertips, levitate and relocate entire cities, and can conjure delicious food and beverage out of thin air.

I don’t think scientific principals apply.

“KINGDOM” of Azeroth.
“WORLD” of Warcraft.

Nuf said.

Everything else was just made up later. I still have my Warcraft 1 Box and CD.

EDIT: Lord I feel old now. Just took a nostalgia trip through some things… and found the following.

Original DAoC Box/Manual
EQ-PoP Boxes/Maps.
The Realm Online CD Case/Login and Password insert.
Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2 Boxes/Maps/Manuals.
SSI Stronghold (1991) CD case.
A crap ton of Floppys of old games. Lemmings being the stand out.

AND… my original NES Operators Manual.

I’m scared to move the cassette tapes. If I see 8-tracks back there I’m going to retire.

So the planet is called Warcraft? Seems a bit odd.

Not any more odd than “Earth.”

I mean basing it on the original game alone, and disregarding everything that came after… yes the Human Kingdom is named “Azeroth” and the planet is named “Warcraft.”

WoW was likely named during a 3am brainstorming event where someone suggested to go back and play the original games to come up with ideas.

That said with the Original game being the only source, it’s rather hard to dispute the line “Welcome to the world of Warcraft.”

You mean the original game “World of Warcraft”, or the original game “Warcraft”. Because it was in Warcraft 3 where the Azeroth/Azeroth issue first came up.

Its like if a game was called “World of Adventure”, you’d consider the planet to be called Adventure.

Warcraft: Orcs and Humans.

Warcraft: Orcs and Humans isn’t referring to the name of the world. Its referring to the craft of war.

Well, given that Humans had no knowledge of Kalimdor pre WC3, I imagine their map making accuracy increased…

Humans once thought there was a vast continent of Terra Australis where Antarctica is, and that the map of Australia had the northen tips of the east and west coasts touching each other.

Kalimdor/Eastern Kingdoms/Northrend

Actually had to go back and watch the cinematics from the first game. :stuck_out_tongue:

The game does very clearly say that Azeroth is a kingdom however.
