Awful server transfers

Let me preface by explaining my situation as a player, and move more into detail as I go. I will post a TL:DR at the end so you can simply scroll down, but I would appreciate players reading through it, as this is an important and potentially deciding factor of Classic WoW’s future and longevity.

** HERE’S WHAT HAPPENED TO ME **: After one too many long shifts at work, I came back to a ‘‘once again’’ long queue for Herod, the queues didn’t bother me too much and were expected, I knew exactly what I was in for the moment I picked Herod. But in a moment of weakness, of REALLY wanting to play World of Warcraft on a Thursday night, I cave in, and transferred to the only servers they allowed me, Earthfury; now at first I was relieved, I could finally grind the night away, except, I couldn’t even form a group for Wailing Caverns or BFD, I couldn’t see anyone in Barrens chat, I was alone in the Crossroad Inn, this sucked, a lot.

As most of you may know, Classic WoW developper’s severely missed the mark in terms of server load. It’s hard to blame them, too many servers leads to much bigger problems in the long run, and this is exactly why i’m exploring this topic right now.

Server transferring off during queues was a good initiative on Blizzard’s part, however the way they did it is abysmal. Blizzard took the absolute worst route, and created an excessive amount of new servers too fast, leading to several dead realms already.

This is my suggestion to what COULD have been: Offer transfers to a handful of medium pop servers of the same category, once those medium pop servers become full, you THEN create new servers to transfer people off said servers, until they stop filling up. This would have created a nice trickle down effect, allowing people to transfer off to reasonably healthy servers, instead of 5 dead server which has no chance of ever filling up.

As far as my main goes, I have no intention of keeping up with it, the empty feeling I get from Earthfury crushes my will to go on leveling, especially if there are no plans of implementing paid transfers in the future.

The joy I get from WoW has always been socializing and creating a sense of community first, and one bad mistake sponsored by Blizzard’s bad option making has ruined a character for me. I will be making a new character on a high pop server again and laugh at this mistake in the end, but the fact that this is made possible really begs the question of why that was an option to begin with.

** TL;DR ** : The server transfer alternative was really bad, as it transfers you to excess servers with merely 2% capacity, I made the mistake of caving in to queues, and subsequently got frustrated that those servers remained as dead as they are. If you are reading this, do not transfer to these realms, at least not Earthfury, as it is too empty to be enjoyable and viable.

The point of this thread is first see if I’m not the only one in this boat, and talk about alternatives to this, because as far as servers go this is probably the worst string of decisions I have seen by Blizzard, and the poorest management of the initial damage.

This is by all means an opinion piece, make your own conclusions.

This is exactly what happened to me. I deluded myself into thinking that the server would fill out after it opened up to other people but I was DEAD wrong. Now my main is banished to the shadow realm that is Earthfury and my only wish is to join him because I have lost my will to live.

My feeling aswell, it feels like condemning a character, with no choice of reverting, and no alternative options. It’s essentially character suicide, and we should warn people against it.

I can’t say I have any sympathy.

Herod and other servers like it came with a big warning label from Blizz “MASSIVE QUES HERE. ADVISE ROLL ELSEWHERE.”
Not only that, it was obvious to anyone who pays attention that if transfers were offered they would to either a Low-pop or brand new server (this is literally how Blizz has always operated for free server transfers).

True, I clinged to the hope more people would transfer off after not being able to play on a weekday night, I wasn’t patient and fell for it.

I’m not looking for sympathy, I’m stating how ridiculous blizzard operates, even if that’s always how they’ve done it. Just because something ‘‘is’’ doesn’t mean it has to be.

So basically things went as you were told they were going to…and you’re somehow surprised by this?

It would have been better if they only had one new server for the transfers or two at most. Three new servers for 6 full realm transfers was clearly overkill. They’ll likely need to merge them eventually anyway

They have to at this point, everyone like me who fell for this can’t really play at this rate.

Just reroll.

Already done.

It sucks but its why people were warning of dead servers with too many servers.

That sucks man. I thought about it myself being on Incendius (WAS 3-ish hour wait in the evenings) but I already saw a difference the first day transfers became available. The queue is now 1/4 or even less. 20-30 minutes tops about last 2 times I logged in.

I knew there would be a decent amount of people transferring immediately, and I had a feeling all servers would even out more less over time. So far it’s much better.

You should be.

These people are victim of Blizzard’s sweet words. Now his character has sucked into black hole without a way to retrieve it back.

Not many people check forums regularly, your average joe wouldn’t know it before hand, all they see are that dialogue boxes upon login (when they are in queue) offering them to move server. Most of them would think, “Oh hey it’s free!” but it’s actually a trap

They should have not offered transferes in the first place. People that are impatient or just detest queues will leave high pop servers eventually. Also the population of servers is already going down.
Anyone who wants to play on a new or different server could do so by re-rolling, there is no risk to that.

I think they were expecting more players to move. They should have just done a forced server split, and moved people without guilded characters and move certain guilds. Sure people would probably complain, but they do that anyways…

Warning massive queue wasn’t enough at the start. They should have closed those servers down as soon as they where full. Then people would move on.

Closing servers is a dangerous game though, it can drive a lot of players off especially if you don’t get to play with your friends.

Sure, but they should have locked character creation at some point.

I feel for you my friend, that is super unfortunate.

Earthfury is doomed. I transferred there and it doesn’t seem like they gave that much thought and just wanted to shave some people off of Herod. They could have offered more transfers from other servers but they didn’t. They could extend the time allowed for transfers but they won’t. The entire launch of Classic has been a failure on so many fronts. You play on Earthfury you play solo. I’ll try the solo game for a little but if the server remains completely dead then the server is no different than Retail and I’ll just abandon my Hunter there. That’s why I left Retail…because it’s a solo game with optional multi-player functionality and that’s Earthfury…solo WoW.
