why oh why when I am fighting 3 or more and I kill one. does it auto target the one behind me and not the one I am facing

That’s a Hunter perk. The devs call it a feature.

Oh no, it’s not just hunters. On my guardian Druid, it targets things 50 yards away I’m not even in combat with while 10 things are slapping the fur off my face.
And folks wonder why mobs get pulled by accident…
I didn’t know Druids had Barrage.
Hidden in the menu there is a combat option at the bottom that you can toggle on.
It switches you from targeting the closest target to the target in front of your character.
