Auto-Silence (It's a Thing)

There is a language filter in WoW so only those trying to get around it should be punished. Those that aren’t using it and complain about the language should have their accounts suspended for a day for mischief.

7 months ago this is how most people felt, but when it finally happens to someone, those people are nowhere to be found.

What you said to those “2” people is relevant to this conversation. I have a feeling it was out of bounds, thus the system is working as intended.

As per the Code of Conduct:

Code of Conduct

Communication

When participating in communication of any kind (chat, voice communication, group finder), you are responsible for how you express yourself. You may not use language that could be offensive or vulgar to others.

Hate speech and discriminatory language is inappropriate, as is any obscene or disruptive language. Threatening or harassing another player is always unacceptable, regardless of language used. Violating any of these expectations will result in account restrictions. More serious and repeated violations will result in greater restrictions.

It’s against the rules to engage in that kind of behavior, period. The filter doesn’t change or impact whether it’s acceptable behavior.

As I said above, the filter is toggle-able because some guilds don’t mind, and some players don’t mind. You’re mostly “allowed” to speak that way with your friends or guild if everyone involved is OK with it (more like Blizzard doesn’t care to police you if you’re not bothering anyone).

The filter is there to stop people who don’t care about the rules from shoving the language in peoples face. It’s not there so that people can swear and behave in a certain manner with impunity.

I really wish they would not have right click report in WoW. The chance that they will remove it however is incredibly low.

This is pretty vague.

“Chick-fil-a sucks” could be offensive to people who like Chick-fil-a, does this warrant a silence?

Were those people in a guild? Were they grouped? It takes MORE THAN TWO people to silence someone. Just because you only whispered two doesn’t mean that only two reported you - More than two DID in fact report you. Now, did you tick off two people who then told their friends, guildmates &/or groupmates what you said & ask those people to ALSO report you? Quite probably so. It could be seen as abuse of the system if those two people asked everyone they could find to report you, but in my experience you’d have had to say something really egregious in order for that to happen. It’s the weekend, so it’s not likely that there are actual humans monitoring the chats. It was an auto-silence, therefore it was more than two reports in a very brief period of time.

Again, I’m sorry you got silenced, but your behaviour toward other players caused them to report you. Likely they told other people what you said & at least some of those people ALSO reported you. As you’ve been told repeatedly, follow the rules & you won’t get silenced. LEARN from this, don’t cry over it. If it’s your first time it won’t be for terribly long anyway.

It does not, no. When someone says “offensive or vulgar”, in this setting, they’re not referring to statements that people just disagree with. They’re referring to statements that are, themselves, offensively worded or vulgar in general.

It doesn’t mean “I disagree with his opinion and think he’s completely stupid.” It means “what he said is meaningfully offensive in some manner.” So saying you don’t like chick-fil-a isn’t “offensive” because the content of that statement is mostly innocuous.

The RCR function shouldn’t be automated, if you ask me, but I don’t see anything wrong with the rules as they are. They just need someone to actually review the statements for context.

Edit:

To clarify, the rules are vague on purpose. It gives wide lateral opportunity to allow some things based on the situation, or punish certain things based on the situation.

It’s literally the best & fastest way to get gold/leveling spammers kicked out of the game. The only other thing they could do is prevent players under level 10 from speaking in public channels & that HURTS the community more than right-click-report EVER will.

Look, I got kicked from the server for reporting a griefer. I said in General, “That’s nice. Got kicked from the server for reporting someone.”

Person 1: That’s what you get for being a taddle (sic) tail.
And continues from there to berate me to where everyone in the channel followed suit to berate me for reporting a griefer. Two of the people in this I whisper $TFU to and I was silenced.

There was no guild, no party, it was random Teldrassil conversation.

In between the release of BFA and the release of Classic, I’ve had no contact with WoW gameplay because I was passing the time in LoL instead.

And let me tell you, all that it takes is 1 report to get somebody punished, chat restricted, or banned in LoL. That’s why I don’t ask others to report toxic players in the game chat. And I’ve gotten notifications from Riot in the LoL client that a player I reported has been punished thanks to my report. They don’t say who was punished and what their punishment was.

But toxic players are not the only ones who get reported. If somebody leaves the games early and/or AFK’s in the game, they get reported too. If they had power failure, or their internet went out, they won’t punished. They only get punished if they leave games over and over. In fact, my internet went out 2 or 3 weeks ago right when I started a LoL game and I’m sure I got reported. I never leave games early so I had nothing to fear about getting punished.

But Riot only notifies you if your report gets a player punished for toxicity. If they were punished for leaving too many games or AFKing in too games, they don’t give you the same notification. This is to encourage players to keep reporting players who are toxic towards their teammates and opponents in game.

In fact, people always threaten to report me for nothing but I’ve never gotten in trouble (they don’t believe that I’m a new player to LoL when I die a lot, get mad, and threaten to report me). As long as I never do anything that would get me punished, then I have nothing to worry about.

And if you got silenced in WoW, then you were doing something you weren’t supposed to be doing.

But, I’ve seen more toxic players in LoL than WoW. In fact, I quit LoL and bought Legion because LoL was too toxic; while WoW has been more relaxing and fun and drama free (most of the time).

And so, I really think this is only half the story if you got silenced just by 2 reports. Like what you said really crossed the line that you got immediately got silenced. Remember, all it takes is 1 report if what you do is really bad.

Almost 43 years old and still the community tries to call me a liar and treat me like I’m 5.

I’m so done with this game and this franchise.

Did your message say how long you’ll be silenced? If what you’re saying here is accurate, then absolutely more than two people reported you. Everyone you were responding to in the channel likely reported you. A bunch of reports in a very brief period of time triggers the auto-silence. That’s what makes it GREAT for getting gold/leveling spammers (or serious trolls) booted/silenced. Unfortunately, people who disagree with a majority can also get caught up in this.

If what you’re saying happened is actually what happened, then your silence would be reversed upon review. It’s my understanding that a human actually DOES review auto-silences.

No one has called you a liar, everyone has said that there was more to the story than what you posted originally. At nearly 43 years old, you should know that there are two sides to EVERY story & the truth lies in the middle. I am assuming that you called out a griefer because you’re on a PvP server - maybe try a Normal or RP server? PvP isn’t for everyone & right now it seems to me that there are a bunch of people just being jerkwads on the various PvP servers in hopes of getting their 2 seconds of fame on some streamer’s channel. And don’t think there’s no PvP on a Normal server either - When I started playing in 05 we raided Crossroads, had to call high levels to come kill the Hordies ganking the Messenger in Westfall, had to call high levels to come kill the Hordies following the Forsaken Messenger & her group in Arathi Highlands… And that was just what little I took part in, as I don’t really do PvP.

Unless you say something racist or homophobic you can pr much get away with anything else

I report so much sexual content in general chat that it is ridiculous. Stop it people!

That’s the thing about assuming, it only makes an a$$ out of you and me.

Normal server, level 14 kept killing all the mobs in the level 7 area I was in, every mob I targeted he targeted and killed. He was not part of a group, was there merely to harass other players. So I reported him for it.

You do realize that silencing will not get instant attention via reports unless its a large amount of people reporting at the same time, right?

Odds are high that it wasn’t what you said in those whispers, it’s what you said in trade/general days ago that got you your time out.

Never said anything racist/homophobic also didn’t threaten anyone. I made two whispers and was immediately silenced. These were single word whispers.

consider yourself lucky then because your server either doesn’t care, or there are a heck of a lot of people with you on ignore.

It’s to filter out the stuff that’s against the rules, but people do anyway.

And you can still report it even if it’s filtered.
