Authenticator Required to Form Groups

Security is not a matter of convenience. Sorry folks. Tinfoil hats are fun and at the end of the day authenticators and SMS protect are designed to make your account harder to “hack”.

We don’t need to go into the AITM SMS rabbit hole.

They trying to cut spam from LFG posting / fake accounts

the main issue for me and quite a few others is the requirement for a extra recurring expense that is basically a middle finger to poor people. all it should require is the sub and payment for the internet bill and THAT’S IT. for every thing they REQUIRE an authenticator for is another reason not to continue to sub. some people only have enough money in their budget for one game and that’s it.

nobody has an issue with security it’s when you make that security cost more money for no real discernable gain that people start taking issue with.

Are we complaining about 2FA in 2022 again? The security system that pretty much everything uses now?

But see it has to be something with blizzards system detection. Because the same phone number is used for 2FA on like 3 other things, with no issue. So where is blizzard getting this detection? Or perhaps they’re the only ones using it? Which seems like an even bigger issue.

Not so much about it in and of itself more about blizzards implementation of it. Having it as a requirement for some services while also restricting it from certain phone numbers is not a good combination.

I do not own, nor will I purchase a cell phone. There is no Approved Desktop method to even put an authenticator on my account

That’s fine it’s completely your choice but you also will have to accept the problems that choice may cause in the future.

If you are that paranoid accept that you will not forms groups ever and don’t get it

That’s the whole point. Sales spammers would get banned then just change their CC and start a new spammer. But it’s alot harder to get a new phone number isn’t it? Lol….

Hmm too bad I can’t install apps on my flip phone. I had an authenticator back when it was a little device with a button to push that gave me a code. You’d think a company as large as ActiBlizz could come up with a different way to verify accounts for people who either don’t have smart phones or like some of the other posters mentioned don’t want an app on theirs.

The Issue here is that for 15 Years I’ve played WoW just fine. I’ve not been banned or Hacked, I spoke to a GM in game once about an issue that was quickly resolved

But suddenly mid expansion I can’t make groups anymore, not because of anything I did in game but because of my out of game situation and choices.

Why shouldn’t I be upset?

You can, actually.

There are much bigger inconveniences in life if you choose not to get a phone for some stupid reason than being able to edit group names in a video game. I think you’ll be okay, champ.

Because the problems you’re having are because of a choice you made that you can change at any time. Technology moves forward and like it or not and it’s keep up or get left behind.

If it’s a matter on money I can kind of understand… but overall I will never understand the stubbornness some people have about getting a cell phone or using a certain app. I haven’t had a landline in more than 20 years.

And yet it isn’t working so… there’s that.

Of course it is. No one ever said it would stop all advertisers. This just increases the cost involved so bans actually make a difference.

Yeah but it hasn’t. There are plenty of WTS groups. I would argue there are more now than there were in 9.2.

Certainly more on my list.

No it just means they now have your phone number to sell with the rest of your personal information…

I totally understand the fear. So many companies do sell info.

Blizzard has not. I have never ever gotten a call, text, or email related to anything gaming, tech etc. To my Blizzard address. It has NOTHING except Blizzard emails.

I tested it using an email address just for Blizzard and in 10 years I have zero spam.

Also no texts or odd things.
