Augmentation is Underperforming in Arena

Intro -
Hello, I wanted to give my thoughts on Augmentation Evoker in Rated Arena PvP. I have been one of the few Evokers adamantly holding out and testing Augmentation through record low participation on this individual spec in Rated PvP. My Credentials: I have been playing Aug since it was first introduced to PTR. I have 4 max level Evokers, 2 of which I got 2640 rating in 3v3 arena on. I was also the #1 Highest Rated Solo Shuffler in NA on my Aug I’m posting on.

My Thoughts on the Current State of Aug -
My first bit of testing lead me to believe Aug was not far off being viable. Since the 10.2.5 patch and recent hotfixes to increase the HP of all players, I now know with STRONG Conviction that Aug Evoker is the worst performing DPS Specialization in Rated Arena.

- This is due to an obvious lack of offensive pressure, we have far too much global cooldown usage bloat due to having 2x prescience charges, ebon might to cast in super fast paced melee games, fire breath to cast for inferno’s blessing buff, then we gotta land a sleep walk on healer to generate any sort of pressure.

Lets Break Down the Problems:

- Tier Set for Season 3 is horrible in PvP: I’m extremely concerned, because this tier set won the Voting Poll for Season 4 Tier Set as well.** You could probably argue this tier set alone is a large reason for Augmentation underperforming so heavily. I love the idea of hoarding fissure damage for our next setup, but the fissures only last 15 seconds, and the cooldown of prescience is 12 seconds. Because Prescience is on the GCD, we have a 3 second window when prescience comes back up to refresh our fissures with it, or all previous fissures fall and we lose all of the pressure from those wasted prescience globals. 6% crit is almost a non factor for a GCD spent in arena, and there is far too much CC preventing us from reliably refreshing fissures in arena. This needs reworked without question, if Aug is to ever return to a viable state in Rated Arena.

- Upheaval undertuned, it does no more damage than Eruption: Upheaval was our bread and butter, 40 second cooldown which is long compare to most specs for a casted spell. This spell received a 10% damage nerf in a somewhat recent hotfix, as well as a 15% damage nerf from losing Season 2’s Tier Set. This lead to a massive 25% drop off in damage for Upheaval, where now, it does very similar damage to Eruption which has no CD, making a 40 sec cooldown “empower” spell feel very unrewarding. It legitimately feels like an Eruption cast that doesnt cost essence.

- Ebon Might is more of a Personal Buff than Team Support Buff: With an emphasis on buffing and supporting teammates, it’s quite ironic that Ebon Might increases our personal damage by 33%, but our teammates by 6.5%. I feel this tuning is way off the mark, and ironic to the identity of the spec and spell. It makes it so us as Augs do no damage without the 33% increase, and our teammates can hardly notice a damage bump with just a meager 6.5% primary stat increase. Augmentation Evoker buffs power fell off nearly 50% in PvP from S2 after multiple nerfs to our mastery, and the Ebon Might nerf from 10% to 6.5%. I feel something must be done here, and this is a huge reason for our lack of offensive pressure is our buffs feel meaningless in rated 3s when we only buff 1 single dps dealer.

- Our Mastery is basically worthless in Rated Arena: Because Eruption casts are soooo long, we have 1 Volcanic school to cast from that locks us out of everything, haste stacking is far and wide the winner here. Why commit all my stats to buffing my teammates versatility by an extra 6% when i can legit have 20-25% more haste to cast quicker. Haste is usually the winner for wizards to begin with, and the power difference here is astronomical.

Lets Break Down the Solutions to the Problems:

- Tier Set for Season 3 performs horrible in PvP: To fix this issue in PvP, I have 3 proposals, 2 that would not effect balancing for PvE.

1st Solution - Let all specs pick between the top 2 voted tiers, this was a PvE Poll anyways because we are so outnumbered as PvPers.

2nd Solution - increase the duration of Fissures buff from Prescience from 15 seconds to 30 seconds. That way we have a window greater than 3 seconds to refresh our fissures before all of our globals are wasted and our damage is gone.

3rd Solution - Remove Prescience off the GCD. Not sure I know an evoker that likes this spell, I avoided it like the plague in season 2, but our Tier Set Bonus requires us to use it to gain any benefit whatsoever. This spell equates to about 15% of our GCDs spent in an arena match, the game is far too fast paced with many disruptive melees and CCs that make most of these presciences go to waste due to the short duration. If the team is unwilling to buff the duration of the Fissures, atleast consider removing prescience off the GCD to make it an appealing talent that doesnt just bloat our rotation to misery.

- Upheaval undertuned, it does no more damage than Eruption: Obvious solution here, either increase the damage of Upheaval by 10-15% to negate the previous nerf since we are very obviously undertuned offensively, OR decrease the CD of Upheaval so that this spell can feel more impactful in our rotation. Our Season 2 Tier Set gave us 15% damage increase to empower spells which compounded with the previous 10% hotfix nerf to really beat this spell down.

- Ebon Might is more of a Personal Buff than Team Support Buff:

1st Part: Increase all Evoker Damage by 18%. Nerf Ebon Might from 33% damage down to 15%. This will buff our floor lowest damage and help us be a little better when we are at our worst with no ebon might. It will not increase our burst damage at all. Only worth healing currently without Ebon Might, as im not wasting cooldowns or essence expenditure on 33% decreased damage without ebon might.

2nd Solution: Increase the value of primary stat increase in Arena from 6.5% primary stat to 10%. This is a no brainer. Our offense is severely undertuned. We are only buffing one other damage dealer in arena. This should not be the same value as buffing a team of 5 in a Mythic+ or a Raid Group of many people in a raid. This just further proves why we are offensively undertuned in Rated 3v3 Arena alone.

- Our Mastery is basically worthless in Rated Arena:
Solution - Allow our mastery to effect our DPS teammate and ourselves in Rated PvP like it originally did. The actual value of the versatility has been decreased 3 consecutive times (Somewhat deserved) since as well, so our buff value is more impactful on a small 3v3 team size. We need haste like an affliction lock needs haste. We have 1 school to cast from, eruption takes way too long to cast, and we need quick ebon mights so we can actually get to our personal damage rotation during these short buff windows.

I suggest either a combination of increasing our damage, and the value of our buffs to our teammates. We only buff 1 damage dealer, and they get the same 6.5% increase from ebon might as 3 damage dealers in a Mythic+ Group. Clearly not tuned to fit the 3v3 Arena Landscape.

Our damage outside (and inside too) of Ebon Might is far too low, our teammates damage increase feels negligible for our buffs, our personal damage is obviously much lower than every other DPS spec and it relies on Ebon Might, which ironically buffs us vastly more than our teammates.

If I were to suggest any hotfixes to improve Augmentation Evoker’s Performance in Rated Arena, some combination of the ideas below:

  • Increase damage of all abilities for Aug by 18% while nerfing Ebon Might damage from 33% to 15% to offset this. OR Increase Living Flame Damage by 10-15% so we feel more impactful outside of Ebon Might.

  • Increasing Upheaval Damage by 5-10% OR Reduce Cooldown to 30 seconds.

  • Increasing the Ebon Might Stat Value to teammates in PvP Only (From 6.5% to 10% of my Intellect)

  • Increase the duration of 4 set Fissures from Prescience to 30 seconds, up from 15 seconds. OR remove Prescience off the GCD

  • Always advocating that we increase our range to 30 yards on all spells, to stay consistent with Preservation. It feels awkward the 3 Evoker specs have different ranges on spells. Living Flame being a damage ability too that has a 30 yard range as Preservation but 25 yards as the DPS specs makes zero sense to me.

Summary / TL;DR – Aug’s Offensive Pressure in Rated 3v3 Arena (Including Shuffle) is dramatically undertuned in comparison to other DPS. I say offensive pressure to also include the value of our teammate/support buffs and personal damage combined.

King whiner here got a completely factual post of mine erased last time while I was in the slammer for something unrelated

Let’s see how this one goes

Let’s be real here, it’s better for the game that they aren’t.

Blizz should just keep going and nerf Sub and Frost Mage to also be unviable then maybe we can start having fun.

We want the whole spec to be basically worthless, not just their mastery.

100%

I think rogue needs a nerf to their survivability (vanish, cloak, etc)

For frost mage, no more LoS on Ray of Frost, and remove shimmer from all specs. Give greater invisibility and mass invisibility to arcane mage only.

100% agree with your post. When a spec is this under represented (for perspective I am #38 on the RSS ladder as aug at almost 1900) there is clearly something wrong. I have gone to just opting out of actually supporting (aside from BS and Rescue) and just playing as if I was a DPS, I don’t even take Prescience anymore…

It seems PvPers don’t like Aug from the above posts, but then again PvPers hate every class, every spec, and just all around seem to find the next thing to hate.

It literally functions like tanks in pvp. I dont think it ever gona be viable

Ngl, Aug is really unfun to play against (& play with) it needs an entire rework into a straight tank spec for dps spec.

Support specs do not work in WoW which is why they weren’t a thing till almost 20 years.

Kinda not really.

Only reason I could see it not being fun to play with is that they just don’t do enough damage. Tons of things are unfun to play against.

Uh, the comparison I’d have drawn is to Retribution, which I guess is kind of a tank spec.

Most things that have a favorable matchup into your spec aren’t going to be fun to play into.

Augment being bad in arena is good for arena.

Cleaning up old posts!

Going to be honest not one soul on here is gonna gaf that aug isnt viable everyone hates it. Rightfully so I believe most people can agreee it should stay bad. the introduction of evoker in general has left a bad taste after s1 dk voker, s2 aug voker, and s3 rn is making them look bad too with how much dmg dev is pumping with disintegrate alone. Game bad no decent tuning no pvp dev wtb shiny blue big sword but blizz won’t drop it me sad.

Just seems like mindless hate, seems to usually be from melee players too :dracthyr_yay_animated:

Ironic dog… bet you weren’t advocating for Ret nerfs during retpocolypse. That was the most overpowered spec in WoW’s history during that rework. No spec should be forgotten about or left to intentionally underperform or overperform by such a large margin.

No hotfixes or attention for weeks since Augmentation was made unviable in High Rated Arena in 10.2. Makes me wonder if they are intentionally keeping it down.
