These days the AH’s are cross faction AND cross server… its ridiculous.
Prior to 1.9, there were only 3 auction houses. There weren’t any in sw, darnasus, tb, or undercity at all. Unless you’re referring to the vanilla beta where they were taken out prior to going live.
I was worried that only Iron Forge and Orgrimmar would have auction houses thank goodness they all will, I hate Ironforge.

Use the goblins if you need to sell to the other faction.
Hey an actual vanilla player! Only one AH was a reason why cities other than Org/IF were completely empty in vanilla. Probably good overall for keeping the player base and collision high especially on the dozens and dozens of medium and low pop servers.
No they are not linked during the vanilla epoch of classic WoW (vanilla up to 3.2 wrath).
In the early days of the official classic wow forums, a poster posited an interesting theory of how the linking, in i think patch 1.6, of same faction city auction house ruined the game.
They explained how crafters were previously able to “corner” markets, or squelch competition, by buying and selling in the various city and goblin auction houses. If you wanted to by x mat you had to trek over to the undercity for example, or y mat you needed to be in thunderbluff.
Interesting theory, I recommend reading it to get a feel of how early vanilla was if you didn’t play until later.
