Attack Power

Excuse the noobish question, but is Attack Power of any use to a mage (not this one, a retail mage)?

I got one of the trinkets from Coren which says 'chance on ranged and melee critical strike to increase your attack power…" But do classes that use magical attacks use attack power?

You want Intelligence to increase your caster damage. Attack Power is for melee and ranged classes. There used to be a stat called Spell Power, but pretty sure that got removed.

The ranged portion of that is intended for hunters as attack power is linked to physical damage. Casters would be after the pocketwatch from Coren, as I believe it has spell power.

It did and I never really understood why.

it’s one of the oldest rating systems back in vanilla, it was what mastery is today, but today it’s just a measurement unit on how powerful you are in your character window, attack power has 0 affect in retail now like dodge rating, but back in vanilla, attack power was used for casters that gave high casting damage before there was epic gear, legendary gear had a ton of attack power attributes

Darn so my int ring with attack power is doing nothing? D:

(It says weapon damage though).

@OP unlikely though I wouldn’t value stats too high during the levelling process as items are replaced fairly quickly and generally won’t impact your gameplay with significance.

basically, blizz never removed the obsolete rating after they scaled gear ratings, there used to be dodge, parry, attack power, block on shields, and spirit, spirit got merged with intellect, attack power got merged with critical strike, dodge/parry got merged with versitality

It says ranged or melee so unless You intend to stay in there and smack him with your staff it’s not going to proc anyway and no it’s not any good for a mage attack power won’t do any good :+1:
Ranged doesn’t apply to spell casters even wands

Attack power still exists, it’s just not shown on the base ui.

There’s a consumable in shadowlands that increases attack power by 20 for one hour; shaded sharpening stone & shaded weightstone.

Edit:
When using my character sheet addon I can see my 222 ilvl monk has 1,546 AP (and a note says increases spell power by 1,484)

However, using a sharpening stone on my mage only adds attack power meaning auto attacks with my sword. Attack power has no use for a caster.

Because it didn’t do anything that int didn’t already do and just having int was easier to understand.

AP was also mostly removed and replaced with str or agi for the same reason, but apparently Coren’s trinket is an exception that just keeps being ilvl updated but never redesigned into a str/agi proc.

Oh. That makes sense. Ty.

For a mage doesn’t do much because you don’t melee that much ,it’s better if you have dodge, speed or evade.

True, though there used to be one instance where it was useful: before the game had the massive damage scaling in legacy raids, but when it was still possible to do solo or with 2 players, the blackwing spellbinders in Black Wing Lair were annoying as a mage or priest because of the magic immunity. So, having a weapon with some AP on it or an AP enchant like potency or landslide made it a little less annoying. Raw AP still affects melee attack power on at least mage and priest as far as I can tell; however, raw strength buffs even from weapon enchant procs like crusader haven’t given melee AP for quite a few years now on mages though they used to do so. Not that it matters at all anymore since you can just 1-shot those spellbinders as long as your weapon does a few dozen damage, but when you were just scratching them with terrible melee damage, anything helped…

(used to take a few minutes, but at least now killing them takes ~6 hits with Thunderfury on a mage…weapons that do ~80-100 damage will 1-shot them).

Change the word “Attack” in the thread title to “White”.

Ok thanks for all the input. The trinket dropped in the Coren dungeon to the mage so it seems sort of useless really. If I could add an enchant that at least would make it useful but sadly not. Wonder why they can just go into these items and change the stats. Its not like this is a very old Classic fight, its a fight created for an event.

Weird logic.

can i just get hit expertise back?
