Atonement: what damage actually converts to heals?

Hey all,

I’ve been getting back into WoW and am leveling a disc priest (I’ve always played Holy priest but I’m trying it out and am loving it!)

However…. I understand atonement but get confused on how it works with AoE damage. You’d think if I was using Mind sear and damaging 5+ mobs I’d be pumping out loads of heals but I don’t? And with talent: Halo, you’d think every target it damages you’d pop a heal from it.

Anyone have a good guide or know the specifics? Is AoE only the first hit not all of them?

Edit 1: I have looked it up but can only find guides on how to manage CDs, no one mentions how atonement works

This is essentially correct.

Mind sear only converts the damage on the initial target into healing

The aoe damage on mobs around the target is not converted to healing

Basically mind sear is a single target spell in terms of healing
