Has assassination always been a really good spec to play for arena/bgs, or just this expansion? I’m really liking it over the other two specs.
I don’t think assassination has ever really been in a bad spot. I have taken a couple lengthy breaks though so I may have missed a bad season.
Assassination has always been a safe spec to run for PvP. However, prior to Legion, Subtlety was just always the dominant PvP spec due to its burst and control. Sounds like Shadowlands will be bringing back some of the old style Subtlety.
From what I play
Classic: Mediocre, you have seal fate, but most will run prepa.
Wotlk: Insane OP, resilience fk up subtle dmg and envenom was god like.
WoD: Insane OP, but combat was also good for a time (when they messed up with mastery and you also can kidney for 8 sec)
Legion: For a time… Subtle was better than anything, but after some hard nerf, assa was dmg, outlaw was control and subtle was crap.
yeah its pretty much always been good, and has never been a trash tier spec
in vanilla, cold blood was a popular pvp talent for rogues everywhere. seal fate could work if you were geared
in tbc, mutilate was good for certain arena comps, but sub was the meta spec.
in wrath is it was all about envenom, sin was hands down the best rogue spec
in cata rogues were weak in general until dragon soul, and then they became top tier. i dont think spec mattered that much for bgs
sub was dominate in mop, sin was mediocre but not bad
from wod-present sin has been good to top tier the whole time
