Ashen Hallow

As a venthyr ret, altoh i enjoy the ability and its power, it just doesn’t feel good to sue, specially for a 4 minute cooldown that you tank might need to walk out of, which happens often, that is also castable, so if you change your mind id cast the downtime feels horrendous.

The problem with rets gameplay has always been that our dmg is focused on wings mainly and our regular rotation can feel lacking. Having the best ability if you want to be competitive in pve be a 4 minute cooldown only worsens the feeling of this in my honest opinion.

Why make it catable, surely a 4 min cooldown is penalty enough, this makes trying to pvp such an awkward scenario as Venthyr. Maybe reduce its power, get rid of the healing , get rid of the cast time and lowe the cooldown.

Make it a 2 minute miasma around the paladin that increased hammer of wrath dmg and does damage to targets around you, make it increase in size the more ticks it does if you feel so inclined to still have it be huge, but just a 15 yard radius or elss would be more than enough.

Id like feedback on other venthyr paladins as to how they feel with this ability right now. For me giving a paladin that isnt holy a castable damage ability like this feels as awkward as giving it to a dk or a warrior.

Maybe my change sucks but im here to brainstorm in a way that makes me want to click the button and no dread that the 4 minute cooldown might be wasted if i misread the battle, as someone who thinks of himself a pretty decent player with good gamesense, this still happens way too often.

Thoughts?

As a long time pally and ret player who enjoys doing all forms of content (raiding, m+, bg’s, and arenas) I couldn’t bring myself to go venthyr in it’s current state. Even if it is the meta spec for raiding I couldn’t stand having a long cd that revolves around bursting. The cast time does feel rather bad on top of the rather long cd, it can be hard and require a lot of fight knoweldge to know exactly when you can place it without risk of wasting your most impactful ability. Having it be instant cast but cost 3 holy power could be a possible change. I could also see an entire overhaul where it replaces concencration and some how makes it a meta part of the ST rotation but it is likely too late to make a change that large. Possibly tuning the abilities cd and or giving it a passive while its off cooldown.

Last I saw ret pals with mag judge lego were outputting more than venthyr. Which is a meme. But its an interesting interaction non the less.

i hate the cast time on it. i could have easily went ventyr if it didnt have a cast timer. the cast timer and long cooldown killed it for me i understand its numerically bis for a lot of situations, but it isnt bis in my heart.

I might be happy with maybe just the cast time being removed, i don’t understand the point of it at all, it makes it so clunky in pvp when they can already just walk out of it.

My guess is that they want to ensure people / encounters have some way to interrupt it. It’s a pretty strong ability to be instant cast. If they take away cast time, they should just make it a bit weaker and reduce the CD.

It already seems like it was likely “meant” to be a replacement for Consecrate early on but the idea was probably nixed.

At this point i disliked using the ability so much in both pvp and pve that i went ahead a switched to kyrian, and im finally enjoying my paladins gameplay.

I’m really enjoying it, honestly. If you time it right, you can use it with every other wings, completely wrecks house on dense packs of mobs in Mythic+ and keeps Ret near the top of dps charts on raid bosses. For a class that shines around burst windows, it adds even more to it.

Not a fan of the cast time, though, especially in PvP, but at least getting interrupted doesn’t lock you out of holy spells.

I think they should allow ashen hallow to be moved and instant cast when it’s already out, kinda like how shamans vesper totem can be relocated.

I would love to go Venthyr but going from a 1 min instant functional CD to a Casted 4 min CD. I just can’t.

It 100% needs to be instant cast. There is no reason for a cast time. I don’t care if they reduce it’s dmg some but really want to see it at a 2 min CD. It’s incredibly hard to set up and very easy to waste a 4 min CD. Which would just make me feel bad. No thanks.

Aside from Convoke, which is just straight up broken, Venthyr Paladins basically have the most impactful, beastly covenant ability in the game. It’s insanely powerful and it smooths out tough trash packs or tyrannical bosses and gives a solid boost to raid damage (and heals a ton with wings to boot). This thread is proof people will complain about literally everything in the game, no matter how awesome things are.

Since I am a venthyr Ret, I can say that aside from the incredibly long cast time, I am enjoying the ability of Ashen Hallow. The fact that it gives and aoe heal along with HoW while active is pretty great.

Now I DO think it could be improved upon, I agree with one of the above responses that the ability NEEDS to be on a lower CD long with a faster cast time. I would be ok with a 0.5-1 second cast time. While everyone else is attacking the boss, I’m still waving my fingers in the air trying to drop a spell…insane. And yes, with many of the bosses needing kiting, there is a certain frustration I have about where I drop it. But that is me learning when IS the right time to drop it. And I am finding, first thing right out the gate is NOT the correct time to drop the spell.

Other than that, I think it’s been great damage mitigation during damage heavy times in raids(LFR 1st wing only) and dungeons.
