My Alchemist has just under 6,000 Artisans Mettle that he really has no use for. There’s not much that needs recrafting or making at this point, and the Alchemy flasks I can try for dont sell for all that much anymore.
It would be good if Blizzard could introduce some use for the currency towards the end, or the opportunity to trade it for gold at least so it doesnt sit there on the currency tab like all those previous expansion currencies that serve no purpose.
You do know there are potions/phials that you cannot guarantee R3 without using mettle.
I think your issue is that your valuing your mettle at a higher rate than what you can realistically get for it.
There are still profits to be made by proc’ing R3 potions/phials if buying herbs when they dip. Now imagine, if you can short-circuit that by using insights to guarantee them. It isn’t a ton of gold, but it adds up. However if you keep valuing your mettle at 100-500g per, then yeah, it isn’t going to happen 2 months before next xpac.
I find myself wondering how much mettle I will squirrel away at the end of the expansion amongst my legacy mat collections. I hate throwing out any mat that’s timegated, no matter how obsolete because I find that every now and then I still find reasons to go back and craft legacy things.
There is no reason to horde mettle outside of DF. No one will care about quality for mogs. The consumables, enchants, etc. are all getting replaced. Concentration replaces mettle in terms of guaranteeing rank, and then there is a new mettle-like equivalent item for recipes and such.
It’s not like I’m holding back from using it at any opportunity. The insights are no problem, that will just be a single stack, it’s a question of how much raw mettle to keep. I suppose one stack per character is probably all I’d ever need for even the rainiest or rainy days.
I don’t know. I never know. But somehow I find myself revisiting legacy professions every now and then and have learned it’s dangerous to ever throw away mats.
Now me, I have place zero value on my mettle. I can craft most things without needing it. Problem I had, very few work orders are placed on the public crafting system and of those even fewer with money to craft. If it is Bind on Pick-up, I might take the order but if you can re-sell the item, I am not crafting it for your profit.
This has left all of my crafters with 14-18 stacks of 1000 mettle sitting in my bank, just taking up space.
Unless you are double gatherer, you probably aren’t looking hard enough.
Again, if you keep thinking “giant payday” guaranteeing some max quality gear item, then you won’t get any traction. Start looking at interim materials, consumables, basically any item that you cannot “guarantee”.
I have all the crafting and gathering professions maxed out. Every one of the sub-trees maxed out and some like my Alchemist have close to 400 extra Knowledge Points above what it takes to do everything. The crafter that took me the longest was my Blacksmith sub-trees, while my Inscription crafter maxed all the sub-trees long before I hit 100/100.
Double gatherers are sort of stuck in that there is genuinely nothing to spend mettle on. Crafters however do have items that they can craft that requires mettle to guarantee.
If you sit on your mettle hoping for a big pay day, or just recraft with inspiration, then sure, yes you won’t use your mettle. There are other items though you could use it for - consumables, interim materials, etc.
I think folks are still valuing every 1 mettle for 100+ gold and that is not where we are anymore this late into the xpac.
I’ve got a good few thousand on my main they can’t use as well…if only we could transfer it to alts who can use it. I mean maybe they’ll do that with the warband system but I’m not getting my hopes up on such as for all i know they won’t. I mean I’m still kinda hoping for all the Shadowlands reps to become account wide with warbands but…idk if that’ll happen either.
They may; I seem to recall they added an option towards the end of Shadowlands where you could buy an item for anima and send it to alts which they could then open for Anima. I think thats true?
It may be too late to do it now, but if everyone got ingame and used the Suggestion system to suggest they do this, you never know, they might.
As I’ve said I value my mettle as zero gold. I craft because I want to help people out. I will not take crafts that have no materials involved and I will not craft items with no pay that can be resold by the person for huge profits.
I do re-crafts for people for free as it isn’t that person’s fault, they need a re-craft but the person crafting it. If someone wants something crafted and its Bind on Pickup, provide the materials I will depending on how much they give refund 90% of the gold they offer. If I craft and I totally screw-up I will buy the materials, send it back to the person and re-craft it or refund 100% of the gold and purchase the materials so they can get someone else that will.
I liked it better when we could do 20 public orders verse now only 4 and it takes 24 hours to generate back one order even if you do multiple orders back-to-back. I probably could use more of my mettle if I sat in city’s advertising, but I can’t sit in one spot hawking my wares and I always seem to be on the wrong character that people want and by time I swap they might already find someone.
When I mostly had just Blacksmith left to level in sub-trees I would have killed to have account bound knowledge points to transfer. Swapping mettle, never thought of that, but that’s a good idea.
