Guys, I’ve recently started with retail and now leveling in Legion. I got my fist artifact weapon there, but I am confused now. What are these artifact weapons, and will they be usable later in Dragonfly? Or are they only for the leveling time?
It was one of the main features of Legion. Their only purpose now is transmog (for looks).
They were the powerful weapons we needed to defeat the Legion but their power was drained at the end of the expansion.

But, can I use them during leveling?
They are intended to be used while leveling through Legion but I dunno how long they will be any good for. Leveling is very fast.
They scale up with level, right?
I honestly don’t know how that works anymore. I haven’t really leveled any characters in Legion since the expansion was live. You used to have to gather things to improve their stats and item level but that’s all gone now.

They don’t scale via leveling, but by relics instead.
Throughout content in Legion, there are various rewards that give items called “Relics” which all have different types (ex: Iron, Blood, Holy, Shadow) that can be slotted into Artifact Weapons provided you have the corresponding type, and each artifact weapon has three slots with different types. They have their own ilevel and increase the weapon slightly, corresponding to the level of the relic placed into them, a bit similar to how you put a gem into a socket. You’ll get a few during your leveling experience as you quest throughout Legion, basically serving as weapon upgrades. The ilevel of your weapon essentially averages out of the three relics placed into it.
The game also won’t give you relics that you don’t have access to via one of your spec’s artifact weapons, barring if you do legacy content or find them as random BoE drops.
The relics are unique to Legion, and as such, you won’t find them in past or future expansions, so the ilevel is effectively capped off at Mythic Antorus ilevel. After you get a weapon that surpasses your artifact weapon, you’ll likely never equip them again as current gear in seriousness.
