Arthas is a Tragic Hero

Noun: A great or virtuous character in a dramatic tragedy who is destined for downfall, suffering, or defeat.

End of debate. Now I’m ready to storm the Maw and save the only interesting human character this game has ever had.

Actually he was a Tragic Villain. A Tragic Hero fights the good fight, but inevitably falls. His was the story of a Tragic Villain, not a Tragic Hero.

Problem is, he wasn’t great or virtuous, he gleefully embraced villainy at every opportunity. A tragic hero needs to actually have some good traits for him to be so.

Also, he’s literally Anakin Skywalker, and not even Vader version, whiny sand hater version.

I can’t wait to rescue him and help him on his EPIC redemption arch that totally won’t suck.

Exactly, to be a hero you need actual virtues to be embraced. He was the Prince of Lordaeron, described as having a great future … but then every action of his was nothing short of questionable or downright evil.

That’s the story of a tragic villain, not a tragic hero.

Vader may have redeemed himself near the end, but he was not a Hero. He was still a Villain. He just gained a form of redemption.

Well arthas was a tragic hero.
when he was into and after the purge he had tears in his eyes
when he was at frostmorun he said ill pay any price to save my people.

Well when you think about it…

Arthas was a hero and he knew exactly what he needed to do, what needed to be done, everybody was going to die anyway there was no saving them, if Uther and Jaina supported him 100% I doubt he would have became the Lich King, but Uther was just a old man who had no idea what was happening and him and Jaina are the reason why Arthas ended like this In my opinion.

Except that everything he did was about his own pride and his obsession with victory and power.

He refused to listen to any solution at Stratholme except his own, and got mad when they dared to say his solution was too extreme. Nothing heroic there.

“I do what I must. Regardless of hte consequences.” is not noble. Because a hero will consider other options and will avoid the extremes until there is no other choice. So even at Stratholme, he was showing signs he was not a hero.

He had an obsession with defeating Malganis, and threw away a friendship in his lust for power.

He was an obsessive man, full of pride, believing he had the answers and that he was the only man who could fix the problem. In short, he was an extremist zealot. That’s not a hero.

His story was interesting, because we saw his fall from grace. But … it was all about his own pride and his obsessions. And that’s what took him from a man who could have been great, and made him a monster that had to be put down.

His death scene was sad, because we saw his fall from grace. But he was not a hero by any stretch of the word. He was a man, a flawed man, who fell prey to pride and obsession.

This is one thing that continuously pisses me off. Noone even bothered to offer an alternative to purging Stratholme. Uther and Jain heard “purge” and promptly mounted their high horses. Neither had a better solution to the problem of “plagued citizens about to die and become troops for a dreadlord.”

jaina walked and Uther just told Arthas he was going down a dark path. Neither tried to save the people of Stratholme or I dunno. TAKE THE FIGHT TO THE DEMON.

there was a what if video of the purge on you tube

They did try and say his solution was too extreme, at which point he came immediately unglued and ORDERED them. They tried to say that there had to be another way. He brooked no opposition.

They also didn’t know about the demon until after Arthas had entered the city when Malganis started to taunt him.

What solution was there? We slammed Bridenbrad with blessings from demigods, Aspects, and finally what’s effectively an angel and nothing worked. Uther and Jaina just didn’t want to get their hands dirty. had those citizens risen unopposed, Mal’ganis would have had a ready made army to march on the rest of Lordaeron.
