Armor Types in Classic

Is it a safe assumption that some classes in Classic will go leather->mail or mail->plate like they did in the retail version a few years back? Also, I think I read somewhere that people did not lose a bonus (that was added later) if they wore a mix of armor types in Vanilla at higher levels. Is that true?

-Hunters and shamans go from leather to mail at 40, paladins and warriors go from mail to plate at 40.
-there is no bonus for wearing the same armor type in all slots (that was added in WOTLK i believe)

Paladins go from mail to plate at 40 and then to cloth at 60 =P

Hunters and shamans begin with leather and can move up to mail by level 40. Warriors and paladins can use up to mail and then can upgrade to plate at 40.

There is no bonus for wearing all of your characters’ armor type, this wasn’t added until 4.0.1 (which is Cataclysm)

Due to the absolute joy of itemisation, there’s plenty of times where a leather piece will have better stats (likely more AP) than a STR plate piece for a warrior. Paladins will heal in whatever the hell has better stats and typically wore a mishmash of cloth, healing leather pants and tier.

It was a fun time.

If you are, say a healer that can wear leather/mail/plate you could also get that cloth gear and there was no disincentive for doing so until cata. But it doesn’t mean that you should just be rolling on all the cloth gear you want.

I remember as a priest very clearly in wotlk fighting with druids who wanted my cloth gear even though there were clearly comparable or better leather pieces in the raid for that gear slot. And even worse cases was of shamans wanting spirit gear.

I am certain it’ll happen in classic too, and what I am trying to say here is you’ll meet people who have no clue on what kind of gear they should be wearing and rolling on because they can just wear everything. Just advice, learn your BiS and maybe even learn the BiS list of others too don’t roll on gear just because you can wear it.

Oh you better believe that if you roll a rogue that you will be losing leather gear at 60 to those fabulous hunters and dps warriors…especially now since there will a lot of pserver folks coming over to play. You’ll also get to see all the /1 LFM UBRS TS/FS/Dal MH on reserve…being spammed by warriors and rogues alike

Yep, the cross-type itemization was definitely a thing. Its going to be even more rampant this time around with all the years of theorycrafting that has been compiled. Blizzard could throw a curve at us with their real data and correct program formulae that may shake up a few item interactions. But yes, expect cloth paladin healers, and leatherbound warrior dps.

Phase 2 BiS holy paladin gear has exactly 1 plate item.
The green bracers from DM.

OP, fury warriors will be wearing leather/mail/ and plate… anything with +%hit rating on it is fair game. Shamans/hunters will wear leather and mail, paladins will wear cloth, plate, mail, and leather. The only benefit of wearing a higher armor type is the benefit of increased armor. There is no benefit to wearing all plate (unless you are a tank), all cloth, leather, mail etc.

But it’s all hunter gear!

Yes in the classic era (vanilla-thb-wrath) you could largely play and gear how you wanted outside of world first progression.

That’s why there’s oddball builds for hunters and rogues that stack spell power cloth for example.

Once upon a time back in TBC I ran a 19 warlock for battle grounds that I had stacked agility on and meleed with. I beat a warrior one time in a wsg melee and that player seemed a bit upset and focused me the whole rest the battle lol.

The dev took that fun away over the years because it was easier to make all classes the same. Good news though for us its back this summer!!

I want to reiterate in this in case anyone here doesn’t know… not only is it common to wear armor outside of your “specialization” for warriors, paladins, hunter, and shaman but it is the norm, your best in slot lists for pre raid and in all tiers include armor outside of your specific specialization.

Is there a spreadsheet out there with this info on it? I’d be interested in seeing it

Sweet thanks! I love looking at stuff like this in preparation for classic (even if I have no interest in paladins)

Has all classes I think, I don’t think I’ve ever scrolled past Paladin though.

Yup.

And all the mages, warlocks and priests want to murder them when the paladins take their cloth.

True, I forgot hunters are the exception to the rule.

Guilds should make sure to get their hunters thunderfury, hunters are the best class in the game.
