I know people have asked for dyes every now and then. this is something similar… i wish they had something (mabye scribers could make it to give them something to sell) that applies, in technical terms, a translucent texture over the skin of the armor piece in question, of a certain color. It won’t replace the armor skin, but tint the whole thing a particular color. Might help in those situations where the color of an armor just doesn’t quite match the color of the rest of the set you’re trying to build.
So, semi-transparent dyes?
Sort of. The key difference is, it wouldn’t require blizzard to expend huge manpower resources to re-create multiple skins of the same thing, with different colors. The base skin remains the same. This would be an overlay, to shift the color over the whole piece of gear.
It would take time and energy to create the user interface for applying dyes though, and testing, etc. They had this in EverQuest, and it was fairly elaborate UI-wise, and the results really varied depending on the color and the base armor.
Star Wars: The Old Republic actually does what Blizzard needs to do: unify colours.
In that game, you can check a box to have all your showable armour tint to match your equipped chest piece.
Yes, they can also dye/tint the slots individually, but that Unify checkbox makes even the most mismatched set of armor look like an actual set.
I think the Devs at Blizzard like the idea of everyone going around looking like a rummage-sale threw up on them.
I know this is an old conversation, but as I was going through my xmog stuff today trying to build out a new set, I was getting more and more frustrated. The easy solution to my problem would be to allow tinting of armors. So I thought I’d come here and elaborate further and post it as a suggestion.
The problem:
Too often, the colors of various armors is off slightly, which can give a very uneven look. Some of the embellishments on an armor (crystals, plate overlays, gems, etc) would look very good with other pieces where the underlying base color is in stark contrast with each other.
Possible solution:
Obviously, this could be an incredible lift, especially to go back and make old armors compatible. But if armors were created with a mesh that allowed for changing the base color, but would leave embellishments alone, it would greatly expand the number of xmog options available and make mixing and matching armor pieces more diverse and versatile. It would also alleviate a lot of frustration of not having that piece colored just right to complete a certain look.
To expand on this further, I also thought that perhaps since Inscriptionists deal in Ink, they could craft various color tints to be applied to armor. You could add in profession skills for crafters such as Tailoring, Leatherworking, and Blacksmithing to apply these tints to armor. This could be done during crafting or even using the trade window (similar to lockpicking and enchanting).
The look and feel of a character is something that many people are drawn to. In a virtual world of characters that all look the same, the xmog function brings about a vital sense of uniqueness to our characters. It’s one of the main reasons I love the xmog system so much and spend loads of time trying to farm different looks. I hope you consider this as an option in some form down the road.
Dear God PLEASE yes. PLEASE.
If I recall dyes/tints would require blizzard to rebuild how items are actually built in game. It a lot of weird texture skins stretched over skeleton rigs similar to how they do character models (the tauren skins are nightmare fuel). It’s a completely different to how gear in Diablo 3 with also has tints are created.
You would also have to have certain colours gated by difficulty so as to preserve some semblance of the current system where LFR is one colour, normal a different colour and a different colour for mythic.
The online outrage would be insane of you could just paint LFR gear to be the same colour as mythic gear without stepping into mythic. We already get that with item upgrades changing appearances at certain item level check points.
