Arenas 101 (for absolute greenies)

So, I’ve been scouring youtube for videos that just have a player turning their arena matches down to around .5x speed, and commenting on what they think, do, look at and anticipate during their matches. I just want to watch someone break down their own play mindset, while I watch them play through matches.

It seems like most of the content I find is just video footage of a character’s loot/talents or random arena games, while they talk about builds, comps, etc…and that is helpful to a point, but I am looking for something that is less abstract I guess.

Is there anyone online doing arena coaching/walkthrough videos like this? Bonus points if they play resto druid :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks

Also, I have heard about the skill capped wow guides guys. Is the subscription actually worth it (to you, if you bought it I mean)?

I think you’ll just want to do what your doing. keep scouring YouTube, and even use Skill-Capped wow’s videos since they are free. Skill capped was very nice for me when I started in PVP in early shadowlands, but I’m not sure it’s worth the subscription in my personal opinion. Most of the videos I wanted to see were on YouTube for free anyways. But they do cover more niche stuff on their premium site. But mostly just play, record yourself, ask for help, and don’t worry about rating.

All the information on skill-capped or any other subscription based service can be found online for free. What you’re paying for is easy access to all that information on one platform. So realistically it’s up to you to decide if those couple bucks a month is worth it. Honestly I’d say try it for a month and if you don’t like what you see ask for a refund or just unsub.

Stoopz on YouTube has some pretty good content IMO for learning arenas. Xaryu I think used to make videos like what you were describing being slowed down and stuff but he’s a mage. Honestly tho, you can learn even from some outdated videos. Main thing to really learn and will help you improve is understanding the fundamentals. Once you understand that and play the game more, you alone will be able to make smarter decisions that will score you the 10-20 rating you will more than likely lose later on to a mage or rogue. Cheers!

skill capped is nice but not worth a sub these days because they dont upload as much as they used to to. what you are doing is pretty much it. watch videos and guides. learn how to use focus macros for cc. practice as much as you can with anyone from lfg that dares to join  try not to even look at rating at all. Just make your groups with the name in lfg like chill games or learning ect. you will get toxic people some time but just remove them ignored them and replace.

Honestly I don’t think you want something so cut dry and direct.

What you need to learn are:
Offensive CDs.
Defensive CDs.
What your class and comp can do to counter the above.
Diminishing returns of CC and how to track it.
Positioning and mobility.
How enemy teams setup their CC. (like, if you know theirs a druid, theirs a high chance he will bash/clone the healer from stealth, meaning if your team can predict this and interrupt the first clone, good things will happen; this is also a reference to positioning, if your the healer and stand on the backside of the pillar, while your team is in the middle, no one will be able to interrupt the druid because you’re on the backside, in this case, standing on the front/side of the pillar is very important, unless your team wants to camp the backside with you, which is understandable if they have both a mage, and a druid here, positioning is very key. )

Simply knowing what every class has skill wise, what the icon’s look like, and picking up on the telegraph/habits on certain classes is enough info to know if you need to peel, dispel, or go hard. That alone would probably take you to 2k. Knowing not to smack the WW monk with touch of karma is game breaking just like you know to stop hitting a ret during bubble. If you see a druid randomly running towards you and your not the kill target, you should 99% expect a bash/incap roar into a cyclone. Your team should also be watching this to interrupt.

That’s about it really. Watch high rated players play your comp and watch 5 to 10 seconds at a time and understand what each one does each global. Generally, most comps play in phases, offensive go, then a peeling go. Sometimes these happen at the same time thankfully to cross-cc. (lets say you play jungle, feral/bm/priest, a cross CC into the other team might be something like. hunter: freeze traps healer, priest: chastises off-target dps to prevent peel, and feral stuns kill target.) This results in a triple CC, preventing the off dps from peeling/casting a heal/casting a defensive on your kill target, while stopping heals, and stopping the kill targets own defensive. This would also allow your priest to door of shadows freely to any of the 3 targets to pull of a fear without being interrupted/slowed/kited. This is what you’d call a offensive and defensive go at the same time, works even better if the enemy DPS’ers have their offensive GO CD’s up and you stop their go while starting yours.

Some great suggestions here. I will add just one.

Learn what other classes can do dynamically once you are up to speed.

New patch? Do some research on changes to classes, learn all the offensive / defensive CDs of every spec in the game. Part of this could be actually playing some of them to get an idea though of course at this stage in WOW this might be only beneficial at max level.

As the previous poster mentioned it’s all about knowing when / how to react for a lot of it.

Take care!

it does have good information in it, but the paid information is more specific to comps/set ups. So if you have a reg partner(s) for arenas and they happen to have a video on it, it can be great. The discord is very useful as well though. I just don’t use it enough as I really enjoy RBGs more.

Thanks, that sounds like solid advice. I recently picked up OBS for work stuff; I think I’ll try that recording gameplay thing, just so I can analyze my mistakes.

Advice which I find applies to a lot of things. I imagine you are right.

I’ve noticed I enjoy these types of PUGs more often than not, yeah :stuck_out_tongue:

Actually, I thought that was freakin great, and slowly digested the whole thing over lunch, tyvm.

I look forward to getting to this point. Hell yeah.
