Arena feels sweatier then ever

This sounds awful and im sorry to hear it. I arena with my irl friends, same group ive been playing with for years, so that is why im probably out of touch on this. My only advice would be to keep your head up and try to find a non-elitist-punk partner to learn with. Someone like you who wants to put in the time to learn, and not get frustrated at losses. I know thats probably a lot harder than it sounds but there’s bound to be someone else on your server in a similar boat.

It’s sweatier but also a result of changes in the ratings system. I think I recall the ratings starting at 1500 and going up or down from there originally. However, in classic it is based on the Retail rating system where everyone starts at zero.

The big issue is not only is the community incredibly caustic - but you literally get to be the punching bag for hundreds of games for people who are terrible to you; all the while they laugh and gloat about your misery. There’s even people here in this thread perpetuating it.

yeah, they’re excited about their 1 win but they lost xyz other games.

This is the same reason World PvP solves itself. It’s, fundamentally the same problem proposed differently. You can only take incessant losing (with no rewards, mind. PvP has structured itself so that even losing a random BG rewards 0 gold) All the while propelling the people who are beating you into better and better rewards, making them more and more difficult to beat. People only go for so long before - “yeah, I’m out”. The PvP community runs people off by being massive jerks.

As an outsider who has looked in - the PvP community seemingly is shrinking (and quickly) because nobody who is new wants to deal with it. You need to cram 20 years of multi-glad knowledge into the span of less than a season; or you’re punched down at; and it’s not like the PvP community has this spotless reputation - when half the bracket gets banned at the end of the season for various reasons. King of what? A massive pile of trash?

FWIW: I have more or less resigned myself that “You’re never gonna be good enough to play in a PvP comp because you didn’t start 15 years ago. Just let it go. You can’t do everything” In short, some of us are content (or have resigned) to Zug-Zug in BG’s and be PvE Heroes. My parses are good enough that I don’t lose sleep at night.

It sucks to hear this is the new player experience. I know things will get better in Cata and especially MoP classic as the changes made arenas much more approachable.

For example, in cata they remove rating requirements on individual pieces of PvP gear, minus the 2200+ elite set. They also add pvp weapons for honor during all seasons, you no longer have to PvE or achieve 1800 for weaps - you get them from honor. Theres also Rated BGs so the BG fans can get "arena gear’ too. In MoP they take it further and all pvp gear is the same and the 2200+ set is cosmetic only. Not to mention… pvp is a lot more balanced and diverse than it is during TBC or WOTLk. All these changes will hopefully increase pvp participation.

That’s kinda how any game is though. Look at counter strike, look at r6 siege. If you haven’t been playing from day 1, GOOD LUCK. while I agree it sucks, that doesn’t go away. But they could change how arena ratings work, or tweak them to increase participation for new/returning players. But why? They get nothing out of it. This company doesn’t make this game for the love of the game, they make it for profit. They want $$$$$. No dev is going to do extra work out of the kindness of their heart, for nothing extra for themselves. Period.

10+ years of progression will do that

I got into Siege. Siege wasn’t bad - at all; a bit of a learning curve but there was so much unexpected stuff you could do that even noobs doing stupid stuff could keep people on their toes. I started playing when they released Mozzie. It wasn’t near the cliff WoW is.

I mean… if you started today, it’s going to be months until your Diamond. I quit completely around when the grappling hook chick was released. And if you didn’t know every circumference of every object in every room, and every potential peek hole in every corner of every map, you were gonna stay hard stuck gold for awhile.

I was lucky enough to hit Diamond once right after they removed favela from rotation and never looked back to ranked. Game is stress inducing lol.

I was Gold player, never hit Diamond or Plat. It was enough to feel good about the game. There was so many cheese strats tho; and tech was evolving constantly. You didn’t have to be a good shooter 100% of the time, just a good thinker.

Classic TBC was the very first time I ever touched arenas. As a beginner, it was one of thee most demoralizing experiences in my life. It didn’t matter how many hundreds of games I put in every week. my partner and I just could not break 1500 rating. To add insult to injury, the amount of points I was getting was so low that it would have taken me 2 months just to get one piece of gear.

After season 1 my partner quit and I was a free lancer for a while until I ran into some Pserver players who taught me. Final season of TBC I hit 2k in about 2 hours of playing with a rouge in disc/rogue comp. My 5s team was solidly in 1800s for the entire season.

The point is, I can totally see why people just throw in the towel quickly. For the majority it’s like spinning your wheels and not getting anywhere and feels like a complete waste of your time.

The arena design needs to be completely overhauled or it will keep bleeding players. It’s horribly designed.

I got lucky and met the right people who were willing to be helpful to teach me, otherwise, I would have just given up completely on it.

Yeah me and my buddy got to 1200 and I was surprised at how it instantly got sweaty at that point. Logged off at 1180 rating lol

Let me clear it up for you, since you don’t understand.

In original TBC and Wrath people would create a team, start at 1500, and play some games. Chances are, if they were not very good or didn’t mesh well together, they would drop down to 1300-1400 at the end of the session. The next time those people would play, either with the same folks, or new people, they would create a new team and start at 1500 again, because there is no advantage in starting less than that.

The ratings on the current gear are based on the system I described above, were the bottom is essentially 1300-1500.

Also, FYI, if your mmr is 1200, you can easily lose rating in the 1100 bracket range. Same goes with people who have a 1k mmr, they can go lose rating and go below 900 or even 800.

The people are correct.

The system is too deflated so the rating requirements don’t make sense.

In original wrath, I could easily 1v2 people up to 1600 or 1650 rating.

Now, I get bodied by random nobodies.

Fin.

That’s because players were much worse on average back then.

So you’re agreeing with me.

That’s cool I suppose.

And yes, the “slow learners”, aka all the people who are good now did catch up.

Oh well. The next time something is new, they will be back at square peg in a round hole.

Not quite. I’m saying the reason you can’t do that anymore is because the player base improved a lot while you didn’t. That’s the reason you’re losing to “random nobodies”.

I wouldn’t say that I didn’t improve, more that they bridged the gap of natural talent and now we’re on a much more even playing field.

At a certain point, you’re not getting much better… ever.

It’s what I’m saying. You haven’t necessarily kept up in terms of skill improvement over the years.

Right, but the ceiling isn’t randoms is the 1600 bracket. Not for me and many others at least.

I play with my wife. My ceiling is whatever we’re doing. This scenario has gone from me getting her most if not all of her deadly gear in the original run to not getting it.

Anyhow, remember that classic Wotlk will flash in the pan like every other classic version before it and all of that “practice” will become yesterday’s practice once again.
