Are you a hero or a foot soldier?

I’ve done all the content on my main and some alts multiple times. But at some point it becomes too repetitive and you just want to reach max level using shortcuts. Just spamming dungeons, doing bonus objectives, world quests, island expeditions, etc. That’s fast enough and demands less concentration. Good times. But because of this most of the story doesn’t make sense anymore. I’m being hailed as one of the warchief’s greatest heroes and I’m the leader of the prestigious paladin order for what reasons exactly? My troll did not even fight at the Wrathgate, he was merely a foot soldier cleaning up bugs at the citadel. He never set foot in Pandaria, and he did not lift a finger when Deathwing was a threat.

I should be footnote in the history books.

I wonder if Blizz could approach this problem without making a sudden change in game philosophy. The problem is that from now on we’ll always be Azeroth’s greatest champion, no matter what. Too bad for the millions of alts who really aren’t.

You’re so humble, and that’s a sign of a true hero.

I always liked to think of myself as a Random hero unit from Warcraft 3. More powerful and important than an orc grunt or Troll headhunter, but not actually on the level of the story versions like Thrall or Jaina. The ones like Jo Jo Headshrinker, Thorgas Broadaxe, or Painkiller.

I’m recognized but not celebrity. Sadly the past few xpacs have been pushing us farther and farther away from this.

This kind of vexes me as well. As someone who’s characters have done little to nothing in terms of in game accomplishments. Haven’t killed a boss that was relevant since BC.

I consider my characters just soldiers because that’s what my in game activities would actually indicate that I am. Yet everywhere I go it’s hero this and hero that. Just makes the game feel a little off for me.

That said the story isn’t that a big of a deal to me so while it seems odd to me it’s not really a big deal.

Seems crazier for the Void elves and Lightforged.

I like the idea of being a high ranking soldier over a hero.

I am neither. I am a Meatshield.

Hero? nah I’m a…

And yes, It’s THAT cheesy.

Most people have never raided “The real way” or done any hardcore pvp… So I think most of us fall into that same category. Most of us just do the quests and get to max level… maybe mess around a bit while we’re there and just level another character. I know that in my experiences I don’t qualify as “Azeroth’s greatest champion” either… I’m more like an errand boy. Or some kind of murder-butler.

I prefer to follow rather than lead so I guess I’d be a foot soldier. Sylvanas says “jump!” and I say “how high?”

I’m a grunt.

I prefer to be a grunt because there’s not a damn thing I do that actually changes how this game unfolds.

I wish blizz would quit with the “omg you’re an amazing 1 of a kind hero!” With every expansion. Why can’t we just have an expansion where “a group of horde/alliance ended the threat!” ?

Would be nice to be anonymous sometimes

Plus like you said, it makes no sense for Alta that had nothing to do with those threats that were stopped

Mercenary. You have the right amount of coin and I’ll consider your job. No titles needed. Not a grunt in a massive army.

Honestly, at this point this character is just in it for the ride and the giggles. Lighting bad guys on fire until he inevitably kicks the bucket

This was my biggest problem with Legion and artifacts.

Thrall:

“You are the greatest shaman in existence next to me, hero, so I want you to have Doomhammer!”

“And YOU get a Doomhammer!”

“And YOUUU get a Doomhammer!”

“You! Over there! Yes you! YOU get over here and get YOUR Doomhammer!”

“Doomhammers for all!”

Meanwhile, while standing at the auction house, one looks around and sees 27 Doomhammers. I loathed this aspect of the game. Everyone’s a hero!

It’s just like when George Carlin said: “When everyone is special, no one is”.

I kind of liked the building up to being a well reknowned hero at first. In each expansion it became more and more clear that you were being recongnized. Arriving in Northrend some of the soldiers comment about how they’ve heard tales of your triumphs in Outland. Come Cataclysm and MoP, and you’ve been hand picked by the King as a Champion of the Alliance (Your story may vary as Horde) to the point of being given charge of an expedition force to Draenor and eventually culminating in you rising to the head of your order. I thought this was cool, but I also feel Legion should have been the end of that storyline. Now is just feels a bit redundant and overused at this point. It would be kind of neat to have an expansion or storyline that depicts kind of like our fall from grace from being a well known hero to a nobody again

Maybe in your timeline, everyone who did those important things just died.

I see myself more as an independent problem fixer. You got a scourge problem, maybe a demon problem? I’ll fix that for you. I’m nobody’s commander or hero, nor am I anyone’s lackey foot soldier.

What’s even worst is that my Zandalari troll shouldn’t even have experienced ANY of that content. If we follow the storyline my adventure should start at the next expac, and I should still be anonymous.

You don’t get it, Thrall is just trying to make some bucks by putting in the market the Doomhammer. It’s a classic strategy of marketing: get this hammer and you’ll be the greatest hero, buy this car and you’ll have all the hot chicks, use this product adnd you’ll be the better lover, and so on.
