It was turned off for a while (after much yelling about it during DF’s initial month of release).
Then they turned it back on for the Diablo 4 event. So now we either wait until that’s over, or keep yelling at them until they turn it off. I’ve been away from the forums for a few days (poking around in ESO’s newest chapter release + D4), and I’m kind of surprised to not see any of the sharding threads on MG/WrA forums or here.
Not sure if we just all collectively gave up, or what. Because judging by how bloody dead Stormwind is right now as I type this, we’re definitely still suffering from sharding on top of Diablo 4 tempting many people from WoW for a little while.
I was there when they turned it back on, in fact I was in the middle of a role-play when it happened. We just suddenly watched everyone around us fade out and vanish, even a few in the role-play we were doing.
It honestly only looked apocalyptic because it was raining in SW at the time, but we had to invite those people back. At first we thought it was some kind of crash and over half the population just DC’d, but it turned out we just got sharded.
It was quite upsetting because I only finally found people to role-play with like that because we weren’t sharded anymore.
The sharding is pretty bad. Often times there’s just a few people around me, just enough for it not to be a ghost town, making it feel like a next to dead server. I’ll see many other guild members online in the same zone yet on a different shard. They need to dial back the sharding intensity a bit.
it is cool though that it turned darkshire into a huge rp hub
On my realm (at least within Valdrakken), sharding was never turned off. I would be logged into multiple alts daily and find one in a dead Valdrakken shard and the other in a populated one. In fact, I’d invite the dead shard toon to the populated shard toon just so it didn’t feel so boring. Overzealous use of sharding isn’t a good thing.
If anything, MG Orgrimmar is the most populated I’ve ever seen it
It’s a cost-cutting measure as they do not have to run as much hardware, and they can crowd more people onto the same server blade. They don’t have to optimize the code or adjust animations.
They’ve also just added something worse than sharding, They are now ‘streaming’ the game during which you won’t see anyone. If you pay close attention you can occasionally see the streaming bar pop up.
Once they made the decision that downgrading subscriber’s network services with crz was okay they lost that seamlessness the old devs used to brag about, it has been all down hill since.
They just quit caring about games made by gamers because if even 10% of wow employees play I’d be shocked.
Sharding is disabled only for the following:
they unsharded it but sharded it again for the D4 goblin event. Didn’t you know RPers never stop playing according to reports on this forum.
What?
I have seen RPers use that as a reason to get ‘x’ done for them. RPers never quit playing.
I have no idea what this means. Do you have links to what you’re referring to?
no i don’t have links - I have seen RPers use that excuse repeatedly over the last couple of years but why would I book mark it or take note of it in any way.
As announced this is now a permanent change back to sharding on all realms.
I don’t even understand what excuse you think they’re using, which is why I asked if you had any examples.
I think they’re referring to the way that roleplayers don’t let their subscriptions lapse between patches and expansions. We stick around, nerding it out, paying consistently month after month and year after year even if Blizzard doesn’t wave shiny jangly keys in our face every fifteen minutes.
Which, yes, is a reason why we got them to turn on special rulesets for RP servers to have sharding off in legacy content most of the time. I think that most people get that sharding is back on so that the city doesn’t crash every other hour right now, though. Expect the rabble to resume once the Treasure Goblin event is over.
I guess I was just confused by this, but maybe it’s referring to asking for sharding to be turned off?
Unless you have a source for that announcement, I’m going to say it’s only on right now due to the Diablo event.
Which, fair enough, but the thing with RP realms is they are not supposed to be sharded. And even if they have to turn it on for an event, we always have to yell at them on forums, twitter, twitch, etc, to turn it off afterwards, every time.
It’s incredibly tiring.
This person just likes to make up “facts.” They claimed in another thread that Blizz is getting rid of open world content, raids, pet battles, etc and the game will only be M+.
Grain of salt.
