With current mounts and player models, there isn’t really any sort of structure to them. What I mean by this, they can basically stack into or pass through each other with no way to really nudge another player or run over mobs, etc.
In most games with mounts or cars, they can bump into and crash into one another and other objects, often showing physical damage. I suspect that these D.R.I.V.E. mounts are not going to be like, which in my opinion might take some of the fun out of racing or just driving them around across the map.
It would be cool if it worked like other racing games out there, where you can spin someone out from physical contact. Not sure if that is something they can implement atm but maybe they will add mass to characters in the future who knows?
What you’re rerfering to is “no-clip”. Currently players and mounts, basically anything player generated, is no-clipped in relation to other players. It is done this way because the few times that blizz has slipped up and allowed players to generate clipping objects has invariably resulted in players trolling/exploiting others by locking/blocking them from areas of the map (NPC’s, quest objectives, trapped with no way to leave except hearthing etc).
I think it extremely unlikely that blizz will change this for the new dynamic ground mount. It would be a recipe for disaster.
The only time it would work is if it was completely restricted to racing sub-zones (realistically it would have to be a completely isolated instance separated from the rest of the game world).
I don’t think there will be any. Precision collision detection of two or more fast moving player controlled objects is next to impossible in WoW’s engine. No way we’re going to see Mario Kart here sadly.
Considering how many people we used to have trolling others by standing on quest givers with large mounts, I feel like this would just be another way to do that. They eventually made NPCs interactable through players to counteract this, but how would you stop players from trolling with this?
Players deliberately blocking others. We have already seen this repeatedly in wow, most recently with the weapon rack toy that got used to block the door to the portal tower.
Easy fix is just no mounts allowed around the quest giver or major through ways, it could dismount someone just outside an entrance so there is no way to block them. Basically no toy or mount area around those points.
I see what everyone is saying though, another avenue for trolling.
Same in FPS games. Ever play Counter-Strike and have someone block a doorway?
Heck that’s probably why classic mode has collision (and friendly fire for that matter) turned off. They’re turned on in competitive mode but you’re expected to behave yourself there. People will vote to kick you.
Alright, so no-clip or collision hitboxes would be the more correct terms I’m looking for. I can understand why this isn’t typically a thing in wow with mounts so players cannot troll each other. Although with auto racing and drifting as the devs are implying with these new mounts, it’s would be a cool thing just to implement for these in the new Undermine zone. It makes sense if they can’t because of how the game is designed that these new mounts will still “ghost” through each other.
Hmm giving human nature i suspect some will take great pleasure pinning another car in place using terrain, making it unable to move. or knocking others off bridges etc.
Ah yes, I can see the chaos unfold already if players are allowed to grief one another in an MMO through utilizing their auto mobiles as a physical blockade.
Can’t remember if it was Battle mech something like that way back in the 90s when they first brought the game online
For like the first week they had fixed spawn points and you would get like half a dozen maybe up to a dozen players that would just stand at those spawn points and murder anybody that was spawning into the game LOL
I think it was Battle Mech
Didn’t last long they had to randomize the spawn points to keep the children from ruining everybody else’s game LOL
