No, I dont think you can have “icons” (Skill buttons) completely bar free. But, at least in Bartender, you can set up a bunch of 1 button bars that would essentially be the same thing.
I am sure there are other UI addons that will let you achieve the same thing.
Or if you just want to be able to see the “icons” to track availability/cooldowns, you could write a weakaura for that.

I started writing weak auras but it became a real hassle trying to get some of the spell nuances and interactions working correctly
If I could just leave everything the same and just create many small single spell bars around my character that would work as well
I tried installing bartender, but right off the bat it changed some of the font of my UI
Weakauras can do everything pretty much.
They can even be clickable.

not a clue.
Try downloading someone’s weakaura package.
Like everything is around your character then.
The best I could offer is downloading something close you find on waigo and see if you can reverse engineer it.

Yep, those Wago IO guys have a ton of stuff, even for specific bosses or UI set ups.
if you dont need to click them and know your binds you can totally have a circle of ability icons around whatever you want.
