I had some characters made around the WotLK on the now locked servers. I was in one of them and there was nothing in the ah, and when I /who there was no one on the server. My characters are only level 10, so I wanted to know if I have to go to the non-locked servers.
You can keep playing on the locked servers if you already have characters there. Or take a free transfer to another server.

not as dead as i first thought, leveled up an alt i left on Windseeker to try for the kalu’ak fishing derby but someone else won before i even caught a single shark
Not sure if that is true anymore. Yesterday (4-23-24) I spent nearly all day playing my level 6 blood elf pally gathering brightly colored eggs on Ashkandi server, took a break, then later came back playing my alt horde toons to find my orc shaman could not gather any of them. Some of the NPCs were missing in Razor Hill too. Couldn’t even log out, had to use Task Manager to shut the game down.
Has Blizzard made an official statement yet what they are going to do with these locked servers?
It’s definitely true. I’m playing on a locked one right now.
Their official statement was those locked servers were supposed to be gone, but luckily that hasn’t happened. I hope it remains that way at least until the MoP pre-patch so I can snag the new tameable mobs without much competition.
Went back today and things are back to normal now. Gathering just fine. I do hope that Bliz gives us fair warning before they completely shut down the locked servers or merge them. I want a chance to move my toons to a new server, only got 5 on Ashkandi.
