The Devourers haven’t been explored in detail yet, but I think the point is that they’re setting up a future threat that exists outside the cosmos chart that we’re familiar with.
I think the implication is that the First Ones created the universe and all the planes of existence that were familiar with, but the Devourers showed up and started munching away at all the nice things they made.
Hopefully this is all lore that is either never explored in detail or held off for a very long time. It needs time for better development, and I would much rather stay on Azeroth. I’m fine with the Devourers showing up occasionally as a local mysterious threat. I like the idea that they are sort of the waste disposal system of the universe.
Looking at SL lore. I don’t think they’re void creatures.
Shadowlands because the nature of that place there is heaps of anima (everything breaks into anima there) they were once a balance to it by consuming it.
The wiki references this:
The devourers are presumed to have their origins in the In-Between, a space between the lands of the Shadowlandsthat few have explored.
The devourers are there own thing as far as I can tell; they were likely a natural component of the shadowlands ecosystem that were created by the first ones for the express purpose of preventing it from spreading completely out of control (or some naturally occuring species native to the shadowlands) that fed on Anima.
Problem is, when the arbiter went brain dead there wasn’t anything sustaining the shadowlands and as such there wasn’t enough anima to maintain this balance and they began just… eating everything like The Nothing from the never ending story.
Devourers. Filthy aberrations. We should have recognized their coming as the sign of the end times that they were.
Now I haven’t looked into any of the new lore because I don’t want to spoil myself but I’d presume K’aresh is likely in a perilous situation and so they have yet again appeared.
I was looking for links to read or watch or see. I haven’t seen much for Midnight. Was wondering if it was actually devourers or if they just reused a model as a new thing.
I thought the Devourers were only in Tazavesh. But again, I have little to no knowledge of what stuff is in this upcoming patch.
First and foremost Ve’nari and the brokers are back and it’s possible some got loose on Karesh. This might actually tie into the whole “zoo” mechanic that she apparently has going on.
The second is that it’s a recycled rig; Blizzard has been using more or less the same “flying bug/tick” model since wrath so Unless it’s literally called a devourer with the same color scheme and such I’m inclined to think that’s the case.
So, Anima is a sort of combination of life expieriences and realized potential that the living accumulate passively throughout their lives so it stands to reason it would still be a thing outside of the shadowlands just… not in a way that we would normally tap into or benefit from since it’s just a byproduct of us being awesome.
My guess then is that it’s an invasive species that accidentally wound up on karesh like lion fish in the Caribbean or Burmese pythons in the everglades.
The issue is that the Devourers would be every bit as much of a threat to the void as anything else since their only compulsion is to consume anima which void entities would have every bit as much of as anything else.
Thus unless Dimesius is an idiot and wants the equivalent of a parasitic infestation on his doorsetep I’m leaning towards this being unintentional.
