Are Rogues Supposed to Start Off Pretty Weak?

I just started playing as a Rogue to see if it would interest me and be my main. Though I do really like the idea of being an Assassin, Rogue, or a Thief, I do wonder why the class is a bit weaker than the other classes that I tried, like the Druid. So, if I may ask, is it normal for Rogues to start off Weak in the early levels?

P.S. Sorry if the answer may be obvious, I’m a bit new to the game

Rogue doesn’t do great in PvE until around 60 or so.

Yes it is. Rogues don’t start getting fun until around the 50s or so. That’s when you get the passives and what not that dramatically improve it. You’ll feel more like a rogue by then.

This goes for all three specs. It does pick up! Just have to hold out for a little while.

I was going to ask if you have heirlooms, but just read that last sentence. If you had heirlooms you could enchant them with elemental force and mark of the satyr, which turns any melee spec into absolute killing machines.

Oh, Okay. Yeah, I get it now.

Thanks for the clearing, Asana

The way rogues start weak does a decent job of teaching you about the class. Without the energy regen passives you get later, the slowness of it sort of helps develop good habits regarding pooling and timing. And without all the control and escapes, it forces you to be more cautious-- both in avoiding enemies, and using sap to take one at a time.

Doesn’t matter even if you enchant your weapons and use looms… you get an opening from stealth then classes which can create a gap like mages and hunters just blow you into smithereens . Vanish is so necessary till that point, you are gonna have a hard time .

He didn’t mention PvP, and you have 1 or 2 charges of shadowstep or hook. If you are just going to vanish as soon as you see someone creating a gap, you will be wasting an useful CD.

I agree you will have a tough time starting out as a rogue compared to other classes, especially against multiple mobs. Until you get the Distract spell, learn to separate patrols with the Stealth “distract” skill where you can get a mob in a patrol to stop if they sense you are near.

It will be even worse if you try a rogue in Classic!

Yeah, I don’t really know what Heirlooms are at the moment. I’m guessing they are like really expensive enchantments to put on weapons to make them stronger?

Heirlooms are gear that level up with you, can be traded between characters, factions and servers, and grant you additional exp.

As a new player it is not worth it to burn all your gold buying them, it works much better if you have a high level character with gold to spare.

Here is a detailed guide if you want to know more:

I am at 42 and I have one charge of shadowstep…after that I am a standing duck

Rogues have a high boiling point. Does not start getting hot till about 55 to 60 degrees (lvl).

Leveling a rogue recently as Outlaw and not getting an AoE until level 63 was painful hah.

His post sounded pretty PvE to me. The vast majority of people do not pvp on lowbies.

Could be … PvE is pretty meh too . No AoE tool. It’s hard work in dungeons .

No argument here. It’s very frustrating to run a dungeon while everyone aoe’s everything and you can only single target. Soloing/questing is super easy though.

You don’t need heirlooms … they are not any stronger than the blue gear you get when you run dungeons . They do give extra XP… upto 55 percent . But as a new player it’s better you level at your own pace and see the big beautiful world and all the great zones and continents.

I’m not sure if I’m remembering correctly… But didn’t rogues start off with only 1dagger and no dual wield nor the ability to have an opener out of stealth?

my first character to get to 55 was my combat (now outlaw) rogue. but this was 10 years ago when the world didn’t scale. it did suck researching and traveling to where it was safe to quest based upon my level, even if green mobs didn’t give max experience gains.
